story here

If you are in council accomodation, would you take it and move into private sector, or use it as a deposit to buy a house?

Do you think you'll take them up on it?

'Here's another idea, I personally do not think that HA or council accomodation should be available in London'

what so (as wella s other points) we take the ill and disabled and move them away from their support systems (ie family)

Yes cos that's save masses in social care / Psychiatric work / etc- do you know how much of a saving family care is for people (to the Government?)

As tempting as £30,000 in cash would be I would have to say no, to buy this house I reckon would cost at least £200,000, which in the short to medium term we could only dream of affording.

My sister has heard some rumblings about new council tenancies being assessed every 5 years and if you earn over a certain amount you are turfed out. No idea where she got this from as she lives in a different area .

How about means testing council rents? I would be ok with that. Would be fairer for people that are now earning loads but living in council houses , wouldn't affect people who rely on benefits/low earners. The surplus to LA's could then be used to build new houses.

Council housing should be a last resort.

Council tenants should be regularly assessed to take into account actually housing needs, income, assets, etc.

If the house is too big or if they could "afford" private accommodation then they should be forced to move out.

Paying someone £30K to move? No wonder the country is a basket case...

Our HA used to offer this. You got £10000 but it had to go towards a deposit to buy a house.

I do know someone though who had the money, brought a house and then sold it a few years later and managed to get a flat with the HA again.

I disagree that people who's home is now too big for them should be forced to move out.

I think it should be encouraged but not forced.
