I think ms shoesmith has been demonised, and will never have a big audience for her perspective
Because it is unpalatable, its complex and it's easier to demonise sw

Agree with Edam and Lady Arden. Shoesmith is despicable. It is because of the likes of Shoesmith that there is the appallingly high rate of suicides in young offenders institutes. I have heard that social workers are in and out of some homes because they feel threatened but are quite happy to leave vulnerable children there. How do you miss a broken back he must have been in agony.

Lillillil · 30/12/2016 19:20

The one good thing Ed Balls done was sacking Shoesmith shame she had to receive the payoff.

Sharon shoesmith didn't personally fail to detect peter connolly broken back, in fact a great ormond street paediatrician, health and social care staff all didn't detect the injury.there was a catastrophic set of events, missed opportunities and familial homicide

It was a systems failure, not solely Sharon shoesmith. She was one those publicly pilloried, and that's fits the prevailing media view that sw are generally incompetent

demonising one individual, one profession is easily done and diverts from scrutiny of other individuals and statutory systems. However as soon as shoesmith name comes up there is a predictable response, that misses the point

As an aside ms shoesmith is not a sw, she's a teacher by training

blueshoes, social workers do t have the authority to remove children. Only the courts can make this decision. Social workers are then asked to carry out the order, with police support if there are concerns about violence.
Nor do they make recommendations based on flimsy pretexts of emotional abuse. There is nothing flimsy about emotional abuse and your provocatively constructed sentence helps no-one.
Please be a bit more informed before asserting the usual myths around child protection. You serve only to perpetuate them. Not helpful.

tasteslikechicken · 01/01/2017 15:01

That isn't to say social workers don't make mistakes. If have witnessed some excellent practice and some poor practice, as with any job.

On another point, I would consider changing the nappy of a baby with whom I have no relationship with tantamount to assault. Social worker or not.

BillSykesDog · 02/01/2017 02:06

She absolutely dropped the social worker Maria in it. The poor woman was overstretched and she fucked her over. Nobody talks about her and Shoesmith whinges and whinges about how hard done by she was but she hung Maria out to dry.

SilkThreads · 05/01/2017 18:20

I cannot bear to hear her explain what a Victim she is.

Baby P was a victim. Victoria Climbie was a victim.

Shoesmith may not have been the only one to 'fail' (ie the system is poor) but her endless whining about the effects of these deaths on HER (position, pension etc certainly not conscience) is really really revolting.
