Social services remove young children from grandparents and arrange adoption by gay couple

"social workers stepped in after allegedly deciding that the couple, who are aged 59 and 46, were "too old" to look after the children."

Is 46 really too old?

That's really worried me.

I'm not against single sex adoptions at all far from it but it's the taking away from grandparents bit.

Dp and I aren't married and have no wills, my parents live in the same road they see my dc every day. They are besotted with each other. I assumed if anything happened to dp and I my parents would automatically get my dc. They are healthy but in their 60s.

If my dc were taken into care it would devastate both my parents and dc. Should we be writing wills then at the very least?

Of course you should write a Will £100 can save a lot of heart ache, you die at the moment your half of any property would go to your parents for example and vice versa.

ruty · 29/01/2009 13:24

i think writing wills is a necessity.

MilaMae · 29/01/2009 13:25

Would they be more likely to go to my parents if we'd requested it in a will?

MilaMae · 29/01/2009 13:26

Our house has both our names on the mortgage so surely the other would get the house.

sorrento · 29/01/2009 13:28

According to Litchick further down then yes, according to my social worker friend my sister probably wouldn't get my children because it would be difficult to assess her suitibility due to her being in the states and as she's childless by choice again that would go against her.
I wonder if it's worth putting in my will that as a Christian family they must go to somebody with similar beliefs.

sorrento · 29/01/2009 13:29

No MilaMae not neccessarily it goes to your next of kin who is not your DP at the moment, it's your parents.

My next of kin is dp,he's put up with me for 20 years

I'm named as beneficiary on all his insurance docs, the house is 1/2 mine,1/2 his we both signed the forms and pay the mortgage,it's both our names on the docs.

Dp's sis's partner has requested his 1/2 of his house will go to his dd,he had to request it specifically.

Won't highjack any more will double check

sorrento · 29/01/2009 13:39

Legally your parents are still your next of kin unless you a) Marry b) write a Will.
Has your DP got parental responsibility ?

theresonlyme · 29/01/2009 13:39

SGM - How can you say the children wouldn't be taken into care if no suitable family could be found? The whole point of this thread is that a suitable family is available and SW are being idiots. imo.

MilaMae · 29/01/2009 13:42

Yes

Sidge · 29/01/2009 13:46

Theresonlyme - if you read the article again you'll see that the grandparents put the children up for adoption. SS didn't take them away.

theresonlyme · 29/01/2009 13:50

Not voluntarily.

I have read articles on it thank you.

I am sure that if the grandparents had any negative things about them, drugs etc, that the SS would have let it be known.

30 years ago they refused my Nana taking me in. Just because she was 50 and I was 6-7. What happened next was much worse than having a Grandparent who maybe couldn't play football every day and actually when she was 70 she kicked a ball around with my son so she would have been fine with me.

Sidge · 29/01/2009 13:56

Huh? Carers Allowance is a benefit for caring for someone who receives DLA.

Do you mean Child Benefit?

So how come we know they can't adopt because of their ages and their health?

You sound like an apologist for the SS.
