Telegraph: (on this and the Gaza issue)

"The BBC is beginning to disgust me as much as Israel does."

This extract from Tory 'culture chief' John Whittingdale in The NoW says it all, "It could also be highly offensive to this woman if she?s a real person."

So we haven't even established whether the woman Ross was making a joke about exists.

I'm not a fan of Ross but this is indeed ridiculous.

For something truly ?highly offensive? see this page of the NoW website. Or don?t ? take my word for it!

GivePeasAChance · 25/01/2009 20:39

I thought his show on Friday was excellent - didn't hear the radio show - but read the transcript and it sounded quite harmless

The thinly veiled witch hunt by the media is boring, tactless, full of hypocrisy and quite frankly makes me support him even more. The NOTW and the Mail should just get the fuck over themselves. I don't CARE what they think - I am quite capable of making my own mind up and watching if I please.

( I also thought Tom Cruise was a revelation)

edam · 25/01/2009 20:44

The Mail and the Screws are owned by companies that are commercial rivals of the BBC, so they have a vested interest in attacking the opposition. All this mock-outrage is just a chance to put the boot in to the Beeb. Grouch is right, the Screws has got a flaming cheek complaining about anything being unsuitable for children!

llareggub · 25/01/2009 20:48

This may come as a surprise to the News of the World but old people are able to have sex. I'm sure when I'm old I'll be pretty irritated to be seen as a quaint old thing that needs "protecting" from wicked youngsters and the Bad World. I think it is really patronising the way society places older people in the bracket as young children.

GivePeasAChance · 25/01/2009 20:57

I hope he stands his ground from now on - and the BBC should support him more than they do. They have made their decision and they should have the courage to stick by it.

I bet 'the competition' can't believe how they have got away with so much so far and are winning so easily - which is why they are continuing with their pathetic attacks on such ridiculous 'issues'!

I read the original version of the Emporers New Clothes to the kids today, and this is just the same.....just because 'everyone' is saying he is foul etc etc etc etc etc, doesn't mean he is. Stand up for common sense !

hazeyjane · 25/01/2009 21:00

That article is hilarious, especially considering the really offensive crap surrounding it - ie Kerry Katona, Cristiano Ronaldo's sex life, church girl porn star(!) etc.

fruitstick · 26/01/2009 09:13

I'm very confused by this whole story.

There was no invasion of privacy as she wasn't named or identified in any way.
There was no offensive language used - maybe he was recommending taking her out for dinner - so it is unlikely children would be affected.

This is a witch hunt pure and simple.

As someone mentioned, Terry Wogan on the other hand regularly broadcasts children's stories which are rewritten to imply that a pre-pubescent boy is performing sexual acts with a variety of middle aged and elderly women.

Get the torches, get the sticks, let's go.

Oh no hang on, people who read the Daily Mail actually like Terry Wogan so we can't do that.

lou33 · 26/01/2009 09:36

as far as i can see the only ones guilty of invading the woman's privacy are the papers by naming her and showing her photo

until then it was all vague and non specific

LiberalIdleOlogy · 26/01/2009 10:16

The smut and 'bad taste' is incidental imo. He should be sacked because he considers his audience is more interested in him than the people he is supposed to be interviewing. These are often genuine A listers, not just the "I'll flash my tits and bathe in cockroaches for a chance to be on tv brigade". There are better hosts and better interviewers available. JR is way past his bbf date.

lalalonglegs · 26/01/2009 10:34

Absolutely agree with Liberal - he just isn't funny/entertaining/edgy. While I agree all the fuss has been completely manufactured, that doesn't disguise the fact that he is very mediorcre.

LiberalIdleOlogy · 26/01/2009 10:38

You know, I think Kirsty (Desert Island Discs) Young would be great. She has an air of respectability, and yet she gets away with very brave questions. Of course that's the old fashioned chat show model. Or, if it's the back from the pub youth they're after, sack JR and get Brand back. He is at least funny.

lalalonglegs · 26/01/2009 11:01

She is a bit staid - there has to be a happy medium. Clive Anderson used to be very good or how about Armando Ianucci - he would keep guests on their toes.

Mediocre not mediorcre btw.

LiberalIdleOlogy · 26/01/2009 11:16

Yeah, can see potential in the Ianucci idea. Think he could carry it off?

lalalonglegs · 26/01/2009 12:06

Genuine wit, not a sycophant - only problem is that he would scare off a lot of the drearier (A-list) people.

Winehouse · 26/01/2009 12:08

I would happily watch Dara O'Briain do it.

lalalonglegs · 26/01/2009 12:14

Do we really need chat shows anyway? Do you want to listen to same people who have already appeared all over print media telling tired old anecdotes and generally whoring themselves about in order to puff their latest film/record/book/hair care product?

HuwEdwards · 26/01/2009 12:18

I love JR, I think he is a real radio and TV talent.

mindalina · 26/01/2009 12:19

I actually thought that was mildly amusing - before it had a name attached anyway - far more so than the Sachs thing definitely, which tbh I couldn't understand why it was supposed to be funny in the first place.

Agree with those saying the ones who are really wrong here is the paper for finding this woman and also her son...

"Mr Moreno agreed to let the News of the World take photographs of his beloved mum, and to publicise her mental condition in exchange for a fat cheque to demonstrate how crass Ross's comment were."

And oh my god none of them would even have known if it weren't for the bloody paper:
"Jose, who heard about the broadcast through the News of the World"

NoTW behaving far worse than JR here, imo.

pointydog · 26/01/2009 18:17

Char shows are so deadly dull. I like Ross's show simply because it is all about Ross and his quips and cheeky remarks.

The show has got very little to do with his guests and that is what makes it entertaining tv.

Janos · 26/01/2009 21:12

I'm no fan of Jonathan Ross but NOTW is far more offensive than anything he could dream up.

noonki · 26/01/2009 21:29

to right mindalina

lou33 · 26/01/2009 23:26

ooh ooh, can i also take a pop at the granddaughter of andrew sachs who wrote her view on this old lady thing as well and yet again reminded us yet again who she is and how she is related to andrew sachs , and how the publicity he endured was awful (yes), whilst at the same time using it to get a few more quid and ride on the back of the old lady too
