I'm sure there's probably thread somewhere I missed, but as predicted we're now in an official recession

Though I'm sure many of us have already felt it before now, sort of puts it in reality when it's official (if that makes any sense)

It's scary how fast this is moving, but all the same I do wish the media would stop relishing this. They seem almost pleased about it

RhinestoneCowgirl · 23/01/2009 16:20

My little brother got made redundant yesterday

FAQtothefuture · 23/01/2009 16:26

my BF's DH is thinking he's going to have to close his business down, he's a builder/electrician. It's a family one, he and his dad have been running it, but his dad retires in the Spring, and people just aren't having big jobs done any more. And while the small jobs keep things ticking over it's not enough to pay his bills.

This recession has hit so fast. But TBH I have had to stop watching the news because it seems to me that they are enjoying it just a bit too much.

goingslowlyroundthebend · 23/01/2009 17:00

hell in a handcart here, we are both self employed and it is gettingvery very tough, thing is if we go under we are screwed due to self employment!

OrmIrian · 23/01/2009 17:02

Why does this definition matter so much? It seems to me that there is almost a kind of glee at constantly telling us how bad things are. How does it help? If part of the problem is lack of confidence in the economy and sterling, going on about how dire it all is isn't helpful.

I refuse to listen to the radio anymore. It's horrible and there's bugger all I can do about it.

Lulumama · 23/01/2009 17:03

i can;t really say this is news. it has been brewing for ages, it would have been more newsworthy if it was not officially a recession

OrmIrian · 23/01/2009 17:03

I see I wasn't the first to make that point

nancy75 · 23/01/2009 17:06

ormirian, i agree with you, the news seem delighted everytime another company goes under.
tbh i think the media have made this recession happen much faster/worse than it would have been.
at the moment people with secure jobs are, if anything better off? petrol is cheaper, mortgage rate has dropped, supermarkets are dropping prices every week, if the news would stop frightening everyone they might go and spend a bit of money and get the economy moving.

OrmIrian · 23/01/2009 17:07

That is true nancy. The recession is only making us better off atm. It will really hit if my employer goes to the wall though.

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/01/2009 17:10

Everyone I talk to in my industry (marketing/market research) opens the conversation with "How are you? Are you busy?" We're all so fearful. Yet work is still happening (touch wood!).

Agree the media is definitely making this worse. Enough to make me wonder what their agenda is. Who wants us to be in such a bad recession?

TheCrackFox · 23/01/2009 17:17

Robert Peston looks positively ecstatic when he has his latest scoop. The few times I have watched the news, as soon as he comes on, I switch over. They are really not helping things.

spokette · 23/01/2009 17:23

BecuaseImworthit, The agenda is that there will be an election next year.

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/01/2009 20:25

Really? Oh what a surprise ...

southeastastra · 23/01/2009 20:26

cool now it's official like

OrmIrian · 24/01/2009 09:13

According to the Times (I think) we may be heading for a depression.

So that's helpful then

Let's place bets on which rag decides to up the ante to Black Death or the End of Civilisation.

SaltireOShanter · 24/01/2009 09:41

I'm just glad (if thats the right word,)that DH at least has a secure job- if not safe- job.

SaltireOShanter · 24/01/2009 09:41

By not safe, I meant going to war zones.

LynetteScavo · 24/01/2009 09:45

It's official now is it? I think most self emplyed people have seen it comming for more than a while.

TheInvisibleBardDidIt · 24/01/2009 10:02

Nancy & ormIrian, it was ok for us, and making us better off, as we thought both our jobs were fine.

Dh got made redundant on wed.

OrmIrian · 24/01/2009 10:48

Aw shit invisiblebard. I feel for you. I keep waiting to hear similar I'll be honest.

BouncingTartan · 24/01/2009 11:05

for Invisible bard. Had your DH been there a long time?

I'm very thankful DH works in a fairly recession proof industry. Especially because I've had my notice in at work to find something part time - they wouldn't allow me to work part time, and the stress of the job, long hours commute, was badly affecting my health.
However it looks like they will have to backtrack and are now working on a solution to keep me in the company, either in a part time role, different to what I'm doing now, or as a consultant.
My next door neighbour worked at Woolies. Not sure if she has found anything yet.

ToAMountainDAISYcal · 24/01/2009 11:25

I think we all new we were in a recession, the news that's it's official doesn't really change anything does it?

Sorry to hear about your DH invisiblebard

The company my DH left just before Christmas have just announced a load of redundancies and have closed down one of the sites he used to work out of. His new lot have just announced like for like increase in profits for the same period last year so looks like he had a lucky escape.

I'm on maternity leave and not returning to work so if anything happened to his job it would be a disaster for us.

ToAMountainDAISYcal · 24/01/2009 11:25

new knew

TheInvisibleBardDidIt · 24/01/2009 11:34

He's been there almost 15 years! Was told last month after making loads of his staff redundant that his job was safe...apparently not. We'll be ok short term. Just hope he can find something else.

So many in the same boat just now.
