BBC scuppers TV fundraising appeal for Gaza victims

OP posts:

shocking but im not surprised

ThingOne · 24/01/2009 14:43

Deeply shocked by this. As far as I'm concerned they are demonstrating their lack of objectivity by not showing the appeal.

It's truly disgraceful. I will be doubling my contribution to the fund.

unfitmother · 24/01/2009 14:44

Bastards - I'm furious!

Douglas Alexander was good this morning at explaining why they should reconsider. I've just donated.
How insulting to Oxfam, Christian Aid, Red Cross, Save the Children etc.

offerdilemma · 24/01/2009 14:51

bloody hell!
surely by refusing to air the aid appeal they are appear LESS impartial?!

Piffle · 24/01/2009 14:55

ITV and CH4 are now going to show it
You can donate online or over the phone
here

unfitmother · 24/01/2009 19:58

Listen to Tony Benn on
this
It's brilliant, just what the BBC needed.

tattycoram · 24/01/2009 20:04

Thanks for the link Piffle I've just donated. Not at all surprised at the BBC, they are absurdly cautious these days

Sunshinesmith · 24/01/2009 21:09

more crap from bbc

I couldn't believe when one BBC executive said that they didn't feel that BBC had to broadcast the appeal as they had already covered the bombings in the news.

Well, what about the tsunami, little madeleine... appeals have been broadcast for the cases above besides the news coverage on their bulletins....

SueW · 24/01/2009 21:47

The appeal is prob getting more publicity from thecontroversy, tbh.

unfitmother · 25/01/2009 12:06

Channel4 and ITV are going to show it.

Sunshinesmith · 26/01/2009 03:48

It is not as black and white as you think I am sure. The BBC does a lot of things wrong but it will be taking this profoundly seriously.

The ideal situation for the BBC is quite frankly that both sides are angry with them. The balance may be that one side is more angry at the moment: but it will not be long before the other side is furious too.

It walks a tightrope. I have no idea if it would have an input into the content of the appeal, or even approval of it, which would be another danger.

I think they should broadcast, if not the DEC appeal, but some version of an appeal. But I don't believe this is a thoughtless, fearsome, pro-Israeli decision. Absolutely no way.

stuffitllama · 26/01/2009 06:09

fearful, not fearsome

for Pete's sake

Tortington · 26/01/2009 07:48

i was listening to George galloway spewing over this - ont he radio the other night.

i can't help thinking that this is a political conflict and as such - the BBC shoudl remain and be seen to remain impartial

however i am more than open to being educated to the contrary.

dweezle · 26/01/2009 09:00

SunshineSmith - the tsunami was not caused by human action - there could be no perceived partiality in broadcasting an appeal for aid after the tsunami. Also, after the previous Israeli incursion into Gaza, many accused the BBC reporting of being anti Israel, so the beeb are obviously being incredibly careful.

I truly believe we don't value our national broadcaster enough. They may not be perfect, but they are a hell of a lot better than almost every other news service in the world.

And judging by various comments on here, their refusal to broadcast the appeal has resulted in rather more funds being donated to the appeal than would otherwise have been made.

wannaBe · 26/01/2009 09:35

I agree with the bbc's stance on this.

This is not a natural disaster like an earthquake or a tsunami where no human is at fault.
And while Israel's actions in Gaza have been excessive, let's not forget that israel were responding to Hamas (who were elected by the people) firing rockets into Israel.

One side might be stronger than the other, but this is not a one-sided issue..

OrmIrian · 26/01/2009 13:21

But there has been a ceasefire (apparently). And the victims of the fighting are no more political in their needs than the victims of the tsunami. To say that it is political implies that one side actually wants the civilians to continue to suffer after the conflict is over. Which I don't think is the case.

Hurray for Tony Benn.

beanieb · 26/01/2009 13:22

the appeal is still going ahead, I don't think it's scuppered.

wannaBe · 26/01/2009 16:25

sky are not going to be broadcasting it either.

wannaBe · 26/01/2009 16:28

here

stuffitllama · 26/01/2009 16:36

There is a knee jerk reaction going on, slightly, even amongst MPs. It's an easy protest and an easy bandwagon to jump on.

Sunshinesmith · 26/01/2009 17:47

What about appeals for Congo, Zimbawe?

Do we all agree that it is a disaster what the Israeli goverment has caused in Gaza?

Still think that is totally inapropiate not to broadcast it. Yet that moron of Jonathan Ross keep using the waves to insult elderly peopel with dementia and be a total knob.

If you believe that BBC is impartial try to apply for a job there. Don't believe the myth loves! Impartiality does not exist in the British media! Fact!
