"Golden Hello's" - What do you all think?

Sorry I've been trying to ignore it but its really riled me.

I dont understand what he hopes to gain from saying he'll pay £2'500 to anyone who takes on someone who has been unemployed for more than 6 months.

Surely this is either gonna make struggling businesses create jobs that they then have to "get rid of" once the payment has been given or its gonna make people disregard those that haven't been unemployed for 6 months in favour of those who have to get the money?

I know I'm not talking much sense and I probably should read up on it more but its just annoyed me.

It seems to me that the government is trying desperately to find ways of reducing unemployment figures and is prepared to try new approaches. You're right that it might cause businesses to behave in different ways and disadvantage those who have only been unemployed a short time.

yaddayadda - I can understand that they want to do that but surely they can understand in the climate that we have that there will be an increase in unemployment and perhaps instead of trying a "quick fix" they should look at helping you during the time your out of work or even better help the companies not have to make you unemployed in the first place.

I'm not working at the mo and claiming JSA, due to being unemployed for 6 weeks I had to attend a group session where the woman was banging out the rules to claiming JSA and then hapilly said that there was roughly 170 jobs in the town (sounds good till she said) for 359 jobs yet each fortnight they still tell me off for not doing enough to find a job,

I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. I think your points about preventing people becoming unemployed and providing more help are very valid. I guess the difficulty is that the government simply can't afford to bail out every failing company. I think there are plans to recruit more personal advisors to work in job centres and provide unemployed people with the type of support they need. Obviously based on your experience that hasn't happened yet.

LuckySalem · 13/01/2009 22:57

They've taken on a group of people in the JC but its just to help people "sign on"

I'm not complaining about the fact I haven't got a job etc there are hundreds of people out there who haven't but its just annoying that they harp on at you about not having a job but its not entirely our fault when there are actually no jobs out there.

I just think this whole thing could have been done much better, instead of just chucking money at it.

EG: They've reduced the VAT but then upped it on other stuff. I know its alcohol and fags but for some people those things are the Relaxing moments of their days.....

I dunno I think i'm just peed off about it, Personally I think they should lower taxes and allow us to choose what to spend it on cos right now the government isn't really spending it on anything that can help me. Whereas I could have bought my daughter a birthday cake with some of the "golden hello" money.

RANT RANT RANT. lol

dp has been out of work since July last year and he's struggling to find a new job because, as everyone knows, it's easier to get a job if you already have one.

Plus, there are a lot of newly unemployed people out there who have worked since dp has so may look more attractve to a prospective employer.

This golden handshake deal evens up the playing field a little for people like him who are struggling to compete with people already in employment, or working out their notices.

Hellos
No apostrophe

LuckySalem · 13/01/2009 23:04

squonk - I can understand that but I honestly cant see how it'll even the field out. Its gonna make it lopsided again but more to your DP. Now those who have just come out of employment are going to be left on the shelf cos they aren't going to get them £2'500.

This in turn is gonna cost us more cos they're gonna have to pay JSA to all these people for 6 months till we're worth £2'500.

I know its hard but I still think there's better ways than this and this is coming from someone who's been out of work for nearly 2 years but only claiming JSA the past 13 weeks so....

I suppose a prospective employer would have to weigh up the pros and cons of either getting someone a tad rusty who comes with 2.5 grand, or someone who's totally on top of their game.

Don't know which one I'd choose, tbh so I think it evens it up a little.

LuckySalem · 13/01/2009 23:07

hmmm I spose I can see that point too (i've never been an employer so...) I just think someone who would do a better job should get it not the person who has either just come out of a job or someone that is worth 2'500 but like I say i'm not an employer so I wouldn't be able to have any say really.

also, from an entirely selfish and wankerish point of view, anything that will help dp get a job is okay by me!

LuckySalem · 13/01/2009 23:14

squonk - maybe i'm being entirely wankerish too in that I think it'll stop me getting a job so I dont want it. BUT I dunno.
