Am not really sure if this is the right place to post this. My sister is in Costa Rica in the area in which the earthquake occurred and I have not been able to make contact with her for 3 days now. I know the communication is poor there anyway however am very concerned now.

I have contacted the British Embassy in Costa Rica with no joy and have been in contact with On Call International via the internet.

Does anyone have any advice as to who I can contact now?

I have little information about her itinerary (am slightly annoyed about this as I asked her 3 times to let me have it) as she "forgot" to email it to me. I only know the vague location as to where she was on Thursday morning before the earthquake hit.

TIA

hope she's ok Worriedsis - my friend is just going out there, or at least is about to go...didn't know about earthquake until I read your post

Thanks MAS. I just don't know what to do next. She is 34 but being the older sister I can't help but worry!

Panic over. Honestly I have been deliberating for hours about posting on MN and have just heard from a friend of a friend that they have had contact from her since the earthquake so she is Ok. Have been imagining her in a bloody morgue over there!

Am off for a large glass of vino now to calm the nerves!

I have been there (not that recently, in 2002). There are some very remote places and it could be that she is fine, but just cut off. For example I stayed in places that just have one mountain road to them - if the road is cut off by a landslide and she can't get to an internet cafe, she'd just have to wait. It does sound as if although it's obviously serious, there aren't a huge number of casualties so the likelihood is she will be OK.

Sorry I can't help with practicalities but wanted to try to reassure you. Have you tried the UK foreign office? - they might know what to do.

Oh x-posted - so glad you've had good news!

Thanks for taking the time to reply though. Am going to have serious words with her when she gets home

By the way I have to say the service from One Call International was fantastic - British Embassy Crap.
