I haven't seen any more details in the paper since thursday. Said she was in a critical condition and that it didn't look good.

I was shocked. I thought in this day and age that you would recover from Rabies.

Thats so sad, I hadn't heard about it.

The latest I've found is here and here
She still seems to be really ill

Once you have started to develop the symptoms of rabies, then it's too late. It needs to be treated before then, after the bite/scratch.

harleyd · 20/12/2008 17:06

i dont think its looking good for her
i only heard about this yesterday

LiffeySaysNollaigShona · 20/12/2008 17:35

That's so sad. I was hoping for a hollywood ending.

Sorry!!!!! I had two pages open and I just posted that on the wrong thread entirely!

pantomimEDAMe · 21/12/2008 10:39

poor woman.

LiffeyAnnaLivia · 07/01/2009 15:52

Just posting an update because I started this thread. Unfortunately this girl died yesterday. Can't really believe that there's no cure for rabies in this day and age.

FAQtothefuture · 07/01/2009 15:52

oh goodness how sad

harleyd · 07/01/2009 15:53

oh i hadnt heard

Thunderduck · 07/01/2009 17:36

It's so sad, poor woman. I hope she was kept sedated as it's such an awful way to die. A lot of suffering involved sadly.

I'm going to Namibia later this year for a month to work with animals, and I'll certainly be getting my rabies shots before I go. It's an absolute necessity if one is going to be working with animals there, and perhaps even if one is just going on Safari.

I believe rabies vaccinations are just like any other vaccine now, given in the arm now as a series of 3 shots and no longer injected into the abdomen now.

Shit starting to panic, was bitten a couple of weeks ago in france by a dog I rescued, only a scratch, but it hurt for days. Healed up now and I assumed as I was okay that was it, didn't realise it could be lying in wait! OMG must get injected, coming to UK tomorrow, can't do anything till I get back. If someone has rabies are they infectious to their kids... ok now probably over reacting now but in a mild PANIC!!!

LiffeyOink · 09/01/2009 20:16

KerryMum, she was abroad when she was bitten by a MONKEY, and maybe she didn't even know that monkies carried rabies. Not sure I would have thought of it. It probably healed up and she forgot about it because she felt fine.

Ponygirl 99.99% likely you are fine, but I'd go to docs when you get home.

Northernlurker · 09/01/2009 20:20

Can't rabies be carried by pretty much anything warm blooded?

LiffeyOink · 09/01/2009 20:22

Yes, a rabid bat could fly over to the british isles.

Arghghghgh! I'm being alarmist now. It could happen, but there must be some reason why it hasn't happened up til now, so I will try not to worry about that.
