I heard this as I was running out of the house so I'm not giving super accurate figures, it's over 100,000 pounds on average isn't it (and no doubt to be replicated in many banks), nurses have been capped below inflation for 3 years I believe (admittedly a poor decision by their leaders but....) and over 25,000 Woolies staff are loosing their jobs. In the light of the global financial situation and the gov bailouts it's not really OK is it?
I feel for the poor Woolies staff, what a time to hear such news.

"nurses slagging away"?....

Slogging surely??

NotQuiteCockney · 21/12/2008 15:23

I always worked in technology - in a wide range of investment banks. Just counted on my fingers, at least 6 of them.

I thought even tech support bods got decent cash ...

rofl @ slagging away

FairyMum · 21/12/2008 16:35

NotQuiteCockney, my point is that there is a wide range of salary-ranges also in investment banks and not all staff get huge bonuses. I think it often seems like people talk about everyone working in banking/finance/the city as "city fat cats". Some of the things you read also seems to suggest that people in banking /finance are themselves to blame for their greed, when actualy the greed of a tiny minority has f**ed things up for ordinary people on ordinary salaries paying ordinary mortgages.

FairyMum · 21/12/2008 16:38

And NQC, yes people in Tech can earn very good money and are often contractors. There are lots of different types of jobs in Tech though. From the level 1 helpdesk you log your calls with when your pc breaks down to the programmers/developers etc etc. So really you cannot generalise......

By the way, I work in management and closely with HR (recruitment, comparing salaries across org etc) so I have a pretty good idea of job roles and salaries in my workplace.

Lots of people are getting no or very small bonuses and many are on very low wages with most of their pay in the bonus in some sectors so that's having a huge impact. Public sector wages have got completely out of hand in senior roles in the last 5 years and they need cutting back substantially. Why if the babyp lady was on £100k do they have to pay £200k to her successor? Why doctors on £250k in one case, the nurse on over £100k and all those quango jobs in the state sector at high wages? We just can't afford that anymore. We're going to get our come uppance as a nation for all this and it's not going to be pretty.

Sorry I have been taking a break and will resume it after this.
I just wanted to say sorry but I left this after the first few posts because I thought it was going nowhere then have realised it did. I just wanted to come back and say I support Edam and FioFio it was supposed to be about disproportionate rewards and inequality together with a bit of sympathy for the poor Woolies people who have lost their jobs
It was posted when I was under the impression (from the media) that GS had a 7 billion bailout from public funds and a 6 billion bonus bill if they didn't then it's irrelevant.
To those who think I'm stupid enough to think GS bonuses are responsible for Wollies situation I'm not. I was contrasting not relating.
I do also agree with Xenia there are some crazy public sector salaries I'm guessing the successor has a lot of unpleasant work to do though can't be easy to find someone to take that on.
Anyway Happy Christmas to you all
