That's so true SEAstra - children's tv nowadays (with some notable exceptions - such as Shaun the Sheep ) seems to be a vacuous whirl of loud music, shouting, flirting presenters, day-glo colours and ever-changing camera shots - all to very little purpose - and all designed to require as short an attention span as possible.

Like TsarChasm - I was privileged to grow up to the sounds of the squirrel what spoke gibberish in Pogle's Wood ...

... and today, dd loves the mice singing in Bagpuss and the echo of the soup dragon

... sniff

RIP Oliver Postgate

BBC news page

dd loves watching old Postgate animations

Wizzcarol · 09/12/2008 14:26

He was a really lovely man and will be missed.

UnquietDad - I thought Bagpuss was orange for years too.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 09/12/2008 15:43

I feel bereft too. Sob.

I remember reading a feature about him a few years ago, and apparently he cycled to the local village to get flowers for his wife every day for over 40 years. Somehow the creator of Bagpuss, the Clangers, Noggin the Nog, etc would have to be a really lovely man, wouldn't he.

But whaddya all mean that Bagpuss was pink? I thought he was grey like the Clangers.

Macdog · 09/12/2008 15:46

Clangers grey????

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 15:46

CatIsSleepy · 09/12/2008 15:48

aww so sad
we heard a little clip from Bagpuss on the radio this morning and dd recognised it straight away...she loves Bagpuss (though calls it 'catpuss' )

i imagined Oliver postgate as a gentle, wise sort of chap

reminds me, must get some Clangers DVDs for dd too...

Macdog, they were grey if you only had a black & white TV till you were a teenager.

MeAndMyMonkey · 09/12/2008 15:57

Aw, such a shame. Lovely Mr Postgate.
I think those of us who remember Bagpuss and the Clangers as grey (ahem Fattipuffs) were victims of 1970's black and white telly!

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 09/12/2008 16:01

here's a dose of nostalgia

Macdog · 09/12/2008 16:16

TsarChasm · 09/12/2008 17:08

Oh absolutely agree with Southeastastra. The programmes were so soothing and gentle.

What have we got today? The worst, epitomised (imo) by that dreadful Beaker girl and her ilk. (Yes, yes I am an old git )

bobthebuddha · 09/12/2008 17:17

Saw Mr Postgate and his co-creator on BBC breakfast a few years ago. They were showing off some talking Clangers toys (I may be mis-remembering this slightly, but no matter). He very genially demonstrated what one of them said when you pressed it....'Sod it, the bloody thing's broken again'
I used to love Bagpuss most of all - I can't really watch it these days without starting to snivel.

MascaraOHara · 09/12/2008 17:21

I loved Oliver Postgate's stuff.. I went out of my way to buy it for DD.. in fact dd is named after one of his characters.

EachPeachPearMum · 09/12/2008 17:21

pruners I remember hearing a radio interview with OP talking about exporting the Clangers to Germany.
He said they played the clip through, then asked the television company chaps if they wanted a translation of what the story was about... and the executives all turned to him and said 'Translation? But they were speaking German!'

His voice makes me feel like crying -- it makes me feel like I am sobbing and being comforted in my mother's arms. It is like a lullabye.

EachPeachPearMum · 09/12/2008 17:26

thready- you're making me snivel now

I actually feel quite bereaved by his death.

My mum is dead too and now there is nowhere left to go.

I want Pogles Wood.

I loved the way he actually wrote the Clangers scripts out in full, so he knew exactly what they were saying.

FrannyandZooey · 09/12/2008 18:15

aw no that's sad
i love them all and just ordered a dvd of clangers/bagpuss/ivor for ds for christmas
he was such a very lovely person - his autobiography is a hoot!

AndaGrouchyBahHumbugtoyou · 09/12/2008 19:04

It's like losing your favourite uncle. Very Very sad, he should have been here forever but his spirit will live on in his films

Godspeed you visionary. Thank you, Sleep well
