Chocolate advent calendars are a pet hate of mine. 3 reasons
I hate that christmas, to me a religious or family festival, should be introduced by Hannah Montana or the like. What have they got to do with it? Just seems like more advertising.
I like the idea of my kids taking turns with the advent calendar, yet that seems harsh/difficult with chocolate.
I think it is good for children to be able to enjoy the things for what they are - this is also why I dislike play areas in libraries etc. Call me a miserable git if you like, but I feel uneasy about the idea of my kids growing up expecting permanent entertainment etc, and not being able to simply enjoy things. - somehow seems like a less happy existance.
Neither of these are exclusively, or inextricably, linked to chocolate advent calendars, they are just one unimportant but highly visible example, (is that not what epitomise means?- not sure) which is why they are a pet hate of mine.
AND shock-horror I spent £30 (ouch)of my meagre wage on a lovely advent calendar some years ago which I don't think works out excessive as it is a toy, a christmas decoration, a story-board and serves 2 kids for, hopefully 5-10 years. Oh, and my kids absolutely adore it. poor deprived children!
