Do you know, I thought this was going to be about a map - meaning women can't read maps and men drivers get stressed by it.....

Allegedly.

With regards to the MAP in question, why not just issue men and women with condoms?

boredveryverybored · 28/11/2008 16:44

I think it's a good idea actually, if a condom breaks on xmas day for eg, well you're buggered arn't you. You have to wait longer to get hold of it. I think having map in your medicine cabinet just incase is not a bad idea at all, considering the faster you take it the more effective it is.

geordieminx · 28/11/2008 16:47

A map issued to all men wouldnt be such a bad idea...

According to the article in the Guardian, it comes as a Christmas pack with condoms and the MAP as well as a discussion on your contraceptive choices.

Great idea to keep some in the cupboard if you rely on condoms I think.

mosschops30 · 28/11/2008 17:00

I think its a good idea. Me and dh have been caught out before and needed MAP, I hate the way the media are painting it as 'heres a pill for the slappers'
I think its a good idea for those who are caught short, or the condom splits or they just make a mistake or cant afford the MAP. IMHO it should be free anyway

JollyPirate · 28/11/2008 17:01

Bollox - thought MAP might be some form of cash.

purpleduck · 28/11/2008 17:03

there are too many acronyms!!
Honestly!!!

geordieminx · 28/11/2008 17:05

I do think £26 is a lot of money to some people.. although not as much as a baby costs granted.

There are probably a lot of folk out there - not just "teenage slappers" that are faced with th dilema of paying £26 or putting food on the table that week...they then think "hopefully it'll be ok" and unfortunately it isnt.

Agree that it should be free and more easily available

Totally agree, it is a great idea.

(I had to get the MAP a few years ago, in my mid thirties, how embarrassing! At least I could afford it though, and was quite ok about asking for it)

ramonaquimby · 28/11/2008 17:14

how often to condoms break? seriously?
what happened to forward planning and taking responsibility for possible outcomes of sex? dunno about this one

MorrisZapp · 28/11/2008 17:18

I think the forward planning and taking responsibility get washed away by festive cheer and er, alcohol.

Nobody goes out thinking 'I think I'll shag a stranger tonight'. But it happens. It just happens.

Tyme · 28/11/2008 17:33

I heard on the radio that the MAP is only really as effective as it can be if taken immediately after intercourse.
Apparently it fails quite often.

For that reason, its probably best to have one handy for those who are intending to 'party hard'.

It won't protect anyone from stds, though.

georgimama · 29/11/2008 07:06

I think it is dreadful. I'm really tired of this "split condom" excuse. How many condoms split? I've never had one split. There may be some people who would keep it in the house as an emergency in case that did happen, but most people would just use it as contraception. Really worried about the message this sends out about condom use too - don't bother with them, they'll split anway and you can just take this. Not for gonhhreoa you can't.

primigravida · 29/11/2008 08:20

Condoms can split - in my seven years of using them regularly (the pill didn't agree with me and I'm a bit squemish about other forms of contraception diaphragm/iud) I have had two split on me both from the same dud packet. So yes it can happen and it is good to have back-up. I still think condoms are a fantastic form of contraception as I have only ever been pregnant once and that was planned. I think issuing people with condoms and MAP is an excellent idea as a good friend of mine forgot to take her pill at Easter once and couldn't get MAP and subsequently got pregnant. In hindsight, it worked out but for many other people it could have been a dreadful situation.

primigravida · 29/11/2008 08:23

Forgot to say -used MAP when two condoms actually split on me. Totally worth the price but did think twice about as was hard-up student at time, my boyfriend (now dh) insisted on paying for it for me which made up my mind.

primigravida · 29/11/2008 08:26

Totally agree with all of those who say that MAP won't protect you from stds and wish that more people used condoms regularly (I'm always telling my friends to use them and give them away to friends in need). Will stop talking to myself now.

LadyBuntingofCupcake · 29/11/2008 08:34

Isn't this giving out the message that it's OK to rely on the MAP as a form of contraception?! Not an 'if' but a 'when'? That it's a given that men and women will not think to bring condoms?

I do agree with it on the whole though as emergencies do happen, I know because I've been there (and the MAP didn't work anyway )

primigravida · 29/11/2008 08:39

They are giving away condoms with the MAP. I agree that it should not be seen as a form of contraception but do think that it should be available for those who need it over the Christmas period.

TotalChaos · 29/11/2008 08:41

georgimama - I've had one split and one fall off inside me. So condom accidents can genuinely happen. OK it's probably quite rare if you are using them properly but...

georgimama · 29/11/2008 09:04

Yes they can split but frankly not all that often and I think this is sending the wrong message, that's all.
