It is all getting a bit scarey isn't it?

I didn't even know they were in trouble! Although it makes sense if no-one is moving home that they would be.

Woolworths probably next. It is scarey times.

LIZS · 26/11/2008 17:07

not a huge surprise tbh but I thought they had preempted this a few months back.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 26/11/2008 17:08

Oh but MFI are rubbish. They tried to go upmarket which was stupid because their brand would never be associated with quality. We went to buy a bed but their mattresses were over twice as much as the internet even though they were allegedly 65% off.
They've had it coming, can't get worried about this one.

RaspberryBlower · 26/11/2008 17:12

They've been vergeing on this for a number of years I think. Also, they were really disorganised and shoddy imo. Sorry for people's jobs though.

llareggub · 26/11/2008 17:14

I'm not surprised. We tried and failed several times to get served in our local MFI when we were looking for a new market. On our third attempt, we actually managed to speak to the manager and he was the rudest man I have ever met. He huffed and puffed when he was called over to talk to us so we did him a favour and didn't buy there.

Last time I went in (for price comparison purposes) I didn't see any staff at all, just some very bewildered customers.

llareggub · 26/11/2008 17:14

a new kitchen, not a market!

lizziemun · 26/11/2008 17:19

Pinkteddy correct woolies has just announced they are in receivership

neolara · 26/11/2008 17:22

MFI were crap. A couple of years ago we bought an oven from them with a guarantee. When it broke down 6 months later, it took them a month to come round and fix it. This compared to another company sending someone the next day to fix our broken washing machine. I was not impressed and swore never to buy anything from them again.

RTKangaMummy · 26/11/2008 17:22

llareggub LOL

I couldn't work out what a market that you would buy in MFI was

The MFI near us has a sign saying amke offer to manager for goods

RTKangaMummy · 26/11/2008 17:23

make

Marne · 26/11/2008 17:25

Our local MFI was shut today, i will have to go and have a look friday to see if they have any signs up (we need a new sofa).

llareggub · 26/11/2008 17:26

Personally I'd be dubious about the goods actually being delivered. They never have any stock.

thenewme · 26/11/2008 17:32

That spelling mistake bugs me every time I see the thread title.

Woolworth's have confirmed that they are going into Administration too

poppy34 · 26/11/2008 17:36

mfi not a suprise

but woolworths is still a shock -although I know they're struggling its part of growing up

OsmosisBOOnana · 26/11/2008 17:37

bums. just chosen the kitchen I want.... from MFI. Back to the drawing board...

PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 26/11/2008 17:38

Oh dear. All those staff losing their job so close to christmas.

The administrators tend to sell off any assets though so a cheap sofa etc may be possible.

pollykettlechips · 26/11/2008 17:38

Marne - watch the prices! Our local store closed a few weeks ago so we went to have a look - a sideboard we bought 2 years ago was selling with 70% off, for £230. Whwne we bought it 2 years ago we paid - yes, £230 and it wasn't in the sale then. Apparently it used to retail at over £1000. Their bum. They've hacked up the original prices to get people in to thinking they're gettinga bargain.

PS: sideboard a load of rubbish too.

mrsmaidamess · 26/11/2008 17:42

We had an MFI kitchen fitted 5 months ago....its guaranteed for 10 years...what happens if something goes wrong with it?

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 26/11/2008 17:55

rubbish customer service, not a surprise. also did some business with their senior management team recently, pretty chaotic and unprofessional bunch of people.

MorrisZapp · 26/11/2008 18:08

It's desperately sad when people lose their jobs, but rubbish businesses with crap service like MFI will be the first to fall in a recession.

You could say that the 'boom' gave lots of business success they did not deserve and they are now reaping what they sowed.

My dad worked for MFI when I was a kid and he was really nice to the customers - honest! I wouldn't defend them now though. Overpriced fall-apart tat. Made For Idiots indeed (sorry to the person who bought their kitchen!)

LIZS · 26/11/2008 18:25

iirc this isn't the first time and last time round there was a management buyout. I doubt we've seen the last of either MFI or Woolworths as a brand.
