Babies could be left "emotionally impoverished" by being placed in buggies that face away from their mothers, research claims.

Obviously the researchers didn't look into the practical reasons why most buggies are forward facing

Presumably this is why two old dears told me this morning: 'she just wants to look at you, that's why she is crying'.

Except DD was looking at me...in my RF pram.

I don't think the original research was 'mother bashing' or trying to make people feel guilty. Perhaps how it's been reported in the press might be an issue.

TBH - what's wrong with research to look at why language skills may be suffering.

Not everything is about 'making' mothers feel guilty. Don't be so paranoid!

i heard this on today yesterday morning and wanted to write in to complain about the crap piece of research! the woman who presented her research could barely string two sentences together!

there was absolutely no mention of factors such as how long babies spend in the buggy, whether they get carried in a sling etc.

she concluded by saying there "is a areal gap in the market for rear facing buggies"...eeer does she know there are about a gazillion buggy brands out there and that's an oversaturated market if there ever was one???

There are two letters in the Times letter page today about this - one from a mum whose baby screamed blue murder when facing backwards and was perfectly happy when they changed the buggy to forward facing (and reacted the same way on a couple of other occasions when they tried the buggy rear-facing) and another whose child loved facing her - and who pointed out one advantage of rear facing buggies that I hadn't thought of - if your child tries to lose shoes/socks/hats, it may be easier for you to notice in time!
