only 3 men, every year we say, there are less and less veterans, and today there were 3.
it was rather poignant.

yy had a tear in my eye.

And I'm not the crying type.

Yes, just saw the report from the Cenotaph on the BBC news

The chap of 110 visited schools local to him last week, to talk about his experiences (read about it in the paper)

We must not let the next generation forget

Very, especially the guy who tried to get up from his wheelchair to lay a wreath. My first knowledge of WW1 was doing war poetry for my English, very moving, probably one of the most important things I learned at school...

The little boys and their school made poppies were lovely. Lovely to see them bow, after they'd put them down too.

Henry Allingham is 112 (he was in the paper at the weekend too )

It might have been Harry Patch, IIRC

I thought it was amazing, imagine the memories those men have, all they have lived through.

ShowOfHands · 12/11/2008 13:50

Harry Patch is a remerkable man. DH is very interested in military history and has his autobiography. It is only in recent years that he has been able to talk about the war and he's the last British Tommy to have seen trench warfare.

I remember listening to him talk in a series a little while ago about coming face to face with a German soldier. He said he thought at that moment of Moses coming down from Mount Sinai and knew he couldn't kill another man. He shot the German in his knee iirc.

An interesting man. My pacifistic tendencies aside, he is one man I don't mind learning from.
