as Obama was declared the winner on Tuesday night.

The person I was speaking to had flown to the US to be there and vote.

Wow!

There's a real feeling of excitement everywhere isn't there? He is so eloquent and hopeful. Our US friends are ecstatic, and feel proud to be American again...

Twims · 09/11/2008 18:08

Was speaking to an American last night and he said that he hoped now that Obama is president he (obama) will make everyone try and be a better person within themselves

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/11/2008 18:10

lol Twims. I think its is so very fantastic that Obama has been elected President but some people do seem to expect him to be rather Jesus like.

plumandolive · 09/11/2008 18:11

One of my US friends says there's a general feeling that he's being treated like a rock star...

Twims · 09/11/2008 18:25

Yes apparently Obama is going to heal the world

Agree PlumandOlive - can't imagine George Bush on mtv talking about how he looks good in both y fronts and boxers

plumandolive · 09/11/2008 18:27

lol but I think they're reeling from the fact that they have a president who is like rock star, and being Americans, they're upfront and proudly "living the American dream" in that sentimental movie story kind of way.

AuraofDora · 09/11/2008 18:32

cant stand the whooping y'all yanks in general but it has gone slightly over t'top with obama

i think he was best of the choice they had but yes he is not the messiah he is just another politican
gawd help the man he is expected to turn recession into plenty and magic healthcare out of his ass

policywonk · 09/11/2008 18:41

I dunno, Aura. He is unusually charismatic for a politician, isn't he? A lot more so than Blairy Tone et al. (Not that I think he's the messiah either - but I can understand people's excitement, especially when compared to the bloody idiot he's taking over from.)

plumandolive · 09/11/2008 18:57

what policywonk said

AuraofDora · 09/11/2008 20:11

yes he has charisma no doubt
yes he was best candidate (not much competition imo)
but i do think that too much will be expected of him in the end, like his election solves all problemsm, it doesnt, it wont soz folks...the weight of the many and myriad expectations of his election to office is huge and could easily translate to a millstone when he doesnt do what they thought he ought to

i mean he does have rather alot on his 'to do' list..

  1. sort out flailing flagging economy & mega multiple repo's of family homes
  2. end failing wars on two fronts without losing face
  3. provide healthcare for the many folks priced out of it
  4. stay safe dodge the redneck bullets
  5. get a dog

hth mr president elect

policywonk · 09/11/2008 20:48

Yes. I wouldn't fancy a job-share with him, that's for sure.

AuraofDora · 10/11/2008 10:45

oh i dunno pw, i have a few ideas that might help him ..

lingle · 10/11/2008 11:28

My children are American. Now they won't have to be ashamed of that.

I'm SO excited!! Have asked DH to bring back some flags for inauguration (sp?)day. Would rather have died than done that at any previous time.

plumandolive · 10/11/2008 12:34

lingle- I think a lot of americans feel like that- they were ashamed to be associated with Bush.
