You must be using very cheap washing powder and have a very good gas/electricity company. Our bills shot up.

My son is an only child, but at the age of six his terries are still useful inspite of the fact he has been 100% potty trained for 3 years. I have just used a terry to mop up the flood he made in the bath room.

My mil still uses her muslim squares bought forty years go for cleaning.

Using cloth nappies with my 2 boys saved me a fortune!! I did get addicted to tying different types but I bought most of them second hand and then sold them on when the boys were out of them for almost as much as I bought them for. I always lined dried unless it was raining and only washed at 40 unless they were very soiled. I dry pailed so didn't need to buy nappy soak and used washable liners and wipes.
I didn't choose to use them because of environmental considerations I used them because both of my boys developed nasty allergies to disposables, they never had any reactions at all to cloth nappies.

Well, my son is insistant that we use towel nappies for bump. Can you tell that toilet trained him rather late at three years and three months.

My son didn't develop any allergies to disposibles, but they stank when the council decided to collect the rubbish fortnightly and it was a hot summer.

Apparently paper nappies make you sweaty. His favourite nappies used to be rainbow tot bots. Sadly totbots don't make them any more and I gave away my old nappies to my sil and a friend who has used my second hand nappies on four children.

BigBadMouseInHauntedHouse · 20/10/2008 22:06

Cloth was certainly a much cheaper option for me.

I wouldn't want to spend £10 a week on something I had to throw away. DD2s nappies are third hand and I paid £30 for them.

For us there hasn't been a noticeable increase in electricity, water or washing powder usage. The heating hasn't had to go on more to help us dry them either - we had no heating for two months last winter and managed.

I used the DD's nappies 5 years down the line for DS. They then got used as dog towels. Now they are floor wipes and general mopping up jobs.

I still have about 10 left in the cupboard, a bit frayed around the edges but useful. They are 22 years old.
