I just heard very quickly and maybe a bit confused, on the tv that the Government are thinking about banning free booze for women at ladies nights to get them to drink less
What about men and the intake they have? That's just as horrendous.

we-ell, first off, there aren't (to my knowledge) any free beer for the blokes nights so they can't be banned.

Secondly, I wonder why nobody thought, when they banned smoking in pubs, that the publicans would have to come up with some way of enticing punters back into their hostelries so they wouldn't all go out of business.

Perhaps them offering alcoholic incentives should have been thought of before they did the blanket smoking ban.

but that's just my opinion

I think it's been brought in to protect women. Most women have a far lower tolerance for alcohol than men and there are some vile horrendous people out there who would be quite happy to not have to pay to get what they wanted iyswim.

Good. Anything that discourages people from getting drunk has my support.

I heard this too on News24 today and did a bit of a double take. here

It's a crap idea frankly, and aside from being discriminatory, it won't work.

Oh, your average 20something out for a good time isn't going to be stopped from getting hammered by this.

If 'The government is keen to promote sensible drinking and cut levels of public drunkenness' then they'd be better off stopping 24 hour drinking for a start. Also banning the manufacture and sale of alcopops which are the work of the devil IMO, serving proper measures unstead of glasses that take a third of a bottle and stopping cut price booze in supermarkets.

I am all for responsible drinking messages etc but the answer to so many things these days appears to be let's ban it, I don't think this addressess the issue.

Being a resident in a couple of countries now with long drinking hours it is amazing how certain countries have mentalites that deal with booze better than we do.

When I was 17, I didn't get free drinks, but it didn't stop me getting legless.
