Peter Mandelson - Given his past employment history with labour; should he be allowed to hold a cabinet post again?

I have my doubts really, but he has been appointed business secretary in the reshuffle.

I cannot believe he is back.

He is such a twat.

What on earth is Brown thinking? I think he might have fucked up mightily on this one.

Hobnobfanatic · 03/10/2008 13:19

I LOVE Peter M! He's fantastic! Hooray, he's back. I'm glad Gordon's pride has given way to sense. Mandie will be fab at his job.
What worries me is that Derek Draper is back in the fold. Grrrrr.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 03/10/2008 13:22

Peter Mandelson is fab. I don't see any reason not to have him back in the Cabinet. Derek Draper though I thought his change of career was too good to be true.

Upwind · 03/10/2008 13:31

I didn't know he was still an MP...

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 03/10/2008 13:32

He is Lord Mandelson doncher know!

noddyholder · 03/10/2008 13:33

gordon brown has a death wish

Cammelia · 03/10/2008 13:35

Is Gordy trying to reproduce the "team" that got Labour into power in 1997

Alistair Campbell will back on the payroll next

Megglevache · 03/10/2008 13:39

Oh joy, all this news is worth it just to see that naff clip of him dancing looking like a white man with no rhythm to D:ream's Things can only get better.

LOL

unclefluffy · 03/10/2008 13:45

It's the peerage that bugs me (although I can see why is would be less disturbing to you, LadyGlencora ). Weren't we promised something like a democratic reform of the House of Lords?

Actually, I think what Brown needs is someone who can keep an eye on the spin, so Mandy may be just the ticket for him. For the rest of us, though...?

MortBlackCatResident · 03/10/2008 13:48

Gordon Brown's doing his bit for recycling!

purits · 03/10/2008 13:49

Another fine example of Gordy's decision-making skills.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 03/10/2008 13:50

Not at all less disturbing for me, UncleFluffy. After all, they cleared out all the hereditary peers like my dear Plantagenent to make room for commoners like Lord Mandelson.
But I will say this for Lord M, he has the proper aristocratic hauteur.

unclefluffy · 03/10/2008 13:52

And he has that fantastic thing which causes a cold breeze to whip through any room he enters... That's got to be good for something, right?

MortBlackCatResident · 03/10/2008 13:54

His bit for recycling and to stop Global Warming then.

CatMandu · 03/10/2008 13:54

I think it's great news, finally the man is making some good decisions.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 03/10/2008 13:57

Good for hot flushes, UncleFluffy! Whether brought on by Mandy himself or not.

unclefluffy · 03/10/2008 14:16
Grin
LackaDAISYcal · 03/10/2008 14:29

Am I missing something then?

I thought his two previous forced resignations for twattery of the highest order kind of meant he was a bit well.......not very responsible at being a cabinet minister?

It's not like he turned the party around and was a hero; he left both times in a haze of embarrassment.

OK, taking the OP seriously for a second (sorry Lacka )... Yes. The first one was fraud (against a mortgage provider) and the second one was broader political corruption. Or lying about something more innocent, depending on how generous you're feeling. None of which is good in a Cabinet minister, but it wasn't exactly selling state secrets to Iraq. Personally, I'm quite happy to see the Labour Party founder (so his return is likely to be less worrying to me). My point about spin stands, though. Brown needs some, and Mandy is good at that sort of thing. I don't think he's likely to do the country much damage, honestly. He might damage the Labour Party, but as I said, I'm not really worried about that! What do you think, Lacka? I don't like the man, but I don't think he's totally disqualified himself.

LackaDAISYcal · 03/10/2008 14:50

personally, and hoping that I don't open myself up to all sorts of accusations of libel , wiht this; I think he is a bit of a buffoon.

Mind you, maybe Gogsy wants him on board to make himself look like he knows what he is doing

The labour party are a bit of a joke at the minute all round, so it makes sense that they have a good class clown on board.

gotta dash
