I am so sorry to you all, for bringing this to your attention,

But I have had this brought to my attention and I cannot live a lie.

Mog the forgetful cat actually died (in 2003 )

I am shocked.

I felt the same way when I found out about Steve McQueen - watched a film of his (I'm too old to remember which one) in my teens. Developed instantaneous overwhelming crush. Arrived at school next morning and announced new found passion to my peers...only to be told that not only was he dead, he had been for years. I was gutted.

I knew about Mog though.

arfishy · 28/09/2008 23:52

I haven't been able to bring myself to read it.

bundle · 29/09/2008 12:08

sorry for being insensitive

tis v old news here

have you read the one where Mog goes to the V-E-T??? been v useful here this last week....

MadameCastafiore · 29/09/2008 12:19

Fuckin hell I can't believe someone would produce a book like this! What next?

Kipper and the unfortunate accident with the lawn mower.

or

Clifford the Big Red Dog and the Big Red Bus!!!!!!!!!

Do children really need to know about characters in books dying?

Flamesparrow · 29/09/2008 12:20

lmao - I can't believe you started an In The News thread

bigTillyMint · 29/09/2008 12:34

Children need to know how to cope with the death of a loved one. This isn't the only book that deals with bereavement in a young child-friendly way.

I just hope you never need to use it.

Flamesparrow · 29/09/2008 13:21

Yes, they need to cope with death, but imo, bring in a different book for that. DON'T wait until the children who were originally raised with the character buy them for their own children, and then kill off an old friend

One of the aunties from xmas would have been less traumatic

fryalot · 29/09/2008 13:23

I learned this on mumsnet a few months ago.

Have been trying to forget I ever read it, and been attempting to live in a cloud of un-knowledge about this.

JulesJules · 29/09/2008 13:26

Lalalalalalalalalala

[fingers in ears]

Mog is not dead! She has just gone to live on a farm!

fryalot · 29/09/2008 13:27

in the country

JulesJules · 29/09/2008 13:28

Oops, Xpost. I see we have the same coping mechanism, Squonk

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 29/09/2008 13:28

mog as in mog and meg? or some other mog?

PortAndLemon · 29/09/2008 13:31

Goodbye Mog was the first Mog book I ever read saw, so personally I am more freaked by this strange undead zombie cat who has returned from the grave to forget things, mess with the Christmas tree and visit the V-E-T (probably too late for the vet, IMO). It's all down to your personal timeline.

fryalot · 29/09/2008 13:34

NZ - this mog not meg & mog, wasn't that a witch and her cat?

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 29/09/2008 13:48

oh i dont know that Mog - yes te one with the witch - never mind - i dont like cat but rip mog whoever you are

Lucifera · 29/09/2008 15:00

Soren, I though Steve McQueen just died this weekend? Am I mad, or are you very, very young?
A propos Mog, I had the pleasure of reading Mog and the Bad Thing to my friends' 2.9yo last week - I hadn't seen it before. The Bad Thing is deposited by Mog in Dad's armchair when she is scared away from her favourite lavatory (sic) in the garden. It was very funny!

SaintGeorge · 29/09/2008 15:05

Paul Newman died at the weekend, Steve Mcqueen died in 1980.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 29/09/2008 15:07

we have the dead mog book, i had to hide it as dd was devestated

Evenstar · 29/09/2008 23:29

My DS was so devestated by reading two pages of this in the book shop (before I could hide it) that he had to have the day off school next day. Mog looked just like our elderly cat, and he couldn't bear it. Our cat lasted another two years, but he still gets a tear in his eye if anyone mentions this book, Mog was his absolute favourite book character ever.

singingtree · 30/09/2008 08:24

Goodbye Mog is without a doubt one of the saddest books I have ever read. Unbearable!

NotQuiteCockney · 30/09/2008 08:29

We don't have it yet. DS2 is going through his Mog Phase, though, we have to have Mog and the Baby and Mog and Bunny regularly.

Mog and the Baby sounds like an AIBU thread, actually ...

I left my toddler with the neighbour, and when I returned, it was crossing the street, chasing a cat. My neighbour's DH would have run my DS over (in the car I was in ), he was only saved by the sodding cat.

They didn't even apologise, just railroaded me into buying a fish for the cat!

MogTheForgetfulCat · 30/09/2008 15:17

Have to say that rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated - do tell all your poor traumatised DCs! Am loving life on the farm

And no, not a namechanger - just a not very regular poste at the mo...

PinkTulips · 30/09/2008 15:38

my dc's love it.

i do think it's a good way of preparing kids for a beloved pet dying.

must say after reading that book 500 times my pair were remarkebly unfazed at the recent death of one fish, running away of one cat and rehoming of 2 kittens although they have ordered a new fish

Lucifera · 01/10/2008 14:55

OT, thanks SaintGeorge, I am hopeless re actors ...

Rafi · 02/07/2009 19:30

It's beautifully done though.

Mog's ghost sticks around to make sure the new kitten settles in, & once that's done she flies into the sun.
