It is tragic, isn't it?

AnarchyAunt · 26/09/2008 19:51

Very tragic for him and his family.

I hope they get the answers they deserve but I suspect not.

Piffle · 26/09/2008 19:53

me too gravely unjust

edam · 27/09/2008 09:53

Terrible. And terrifying that the Met have this shoot to kill policy without any public debate (beforehand).

The more details come out, the more they sound like the Keystone Cops.

Freckle · 27/09/2008 09:59

I do think that procedures need to be tightened to prevent a similar thing ever happening again. However, I do think the police are on a hiding to nothing. If JCdM had been a terrorist and there had been a tragedy on the underground because the police didn't act quickly enough, they would have been hung from the rafters. 7/7 spooked everyone, particularly the security forces, making them much more likely to act quickly and perhaps without sufficient thought - and that is where the changes have to be made.

It is clear that certain established procedures were not followed (the fact that the observer had gone for a pee or something and therefore couldn't confirm JCdM's identity but action took place anyway) and I do think someone has to take responsibility for that. Not sure that the family will get much relief from this inquiry. Nothing will bring their loved one back. Awful for them.

JuneBugJen · 27/09/2008 10:01

Awful for them, but agree with freckle.
Also, remember it was at the height of the 7/7 attacks and London was very jumpy. Lost a friend in that so can see why the police (although not condoning it all) would be nervous.

mamadiva · 28/09/2008 21:26

I remember the day this happened remember hearing someone say 'they shot one of the bastards' when I was on my way to work and thinking not again please.

Then the details came out feel so sorry for this poor man and his family more becaus eof the fact there are so many flaws in the
scums police's account of things.

RIP Jean Charles . Yet another fatal mistake by those supposed to be looking out for this country.

Carmenere · 28/09/2008 21:28

They ARE looking out for this country! There is no excusing this tragic mistake but the security forces do an excellent job of keeping us safe against an insidious, erratic and insane enemy.

edam · 28/09/2008 21:32

Panic does not make it OK to shoot innocent people. Or smear their names - as the Met did with poor Jean Charles.

It is no use 'defending' us against terrorism by shooting anyone who looks a bit swarthy. By failing to give your staff decent photos of the person they are actually looking for. By failing to get your firearms officers there on time - the team outside the building where JCdM lived were four (or six, can't recall) HOURS late. By letting someone you claim you thought was a suicide bomber get on two different buses, FFS.

mamadiva · 28/09/2008 21:43

Well the same thing goes in the station too apparently he ran and jumped a turn stile and bolted onto a train when not one person saw him doing so and even those on the train said that wasn t the case. HE was running so fast he managed to stop to get a newspaper. Dont think so somehow and also the CCTV tapes going missing funny that isnt it.

That man and his family deserve justice there are much worse than him in this country they should start targetting those who need to be bloody targetted not some random guy who may or may not look a bit suspicious and to me that isnt looking out for us.

themildmannneredjanitor · 28/09/2008 21:47

how dare you call the police scum???

fucking hell. they do a job that most of us wouldn't do for a big clock.

and for the large part they do well, with good humour and tolerance .

Try brreaking the law in saudi arabia or the united states or china or even spain and see how pleasant the police are and how well you are treated.

themildmannneredjanitor · 28/09/2008 21:52

speeding in the usa

mamadiva · 28/09/2008 22:09

My dad is a policeman MMJ and I think on thewhole yes they do well but the ones who did this and tried to cover up are bloody scum and I will never say otherwise.
