i had a cs in newham general. i'd have given him a round of applause if he'd said that while i was in there.

He should find another specialty. Maybe he should be a penis doctor (urologist?) where at least he could empathise with what it is like to be a dick.

Charlee · 25/09/2008 15:31

What a cock jockey, i would have had to interupt my labour to headbutt him...... [Charlee wonders off to contemplate anger managment]

classic!!!

Don't think his comment was aimed at the woman but more at the hospital in general over a very high CS rate.

Having said that he should not have said what he did in earshot of a woman in labour. There are forums for raising issues like this one - the maternity unit where women are vulnerable is not one of them though.

"When he's had to endure labour then he can have an opinion."

No men should ever have an opinion on child birth then?

LaVie · 26/09/2008 18:25

No Doodle2U, they shouldn't. At the end of the day it does not concern them. They aren't going through it.

If a bloke had just been kicked in the knackers and I said "oh please, get over it, it doesn't hurt that much" I would be quite rightly shouted down. I have never and will never have a clue how much it hurts ( obviously not comparable to childbirth but you get the idea!) Therefore, if men think that getting kicked in the knackers hurt then fine, I can't really have a valid opinion on it because I will never experience it.

Or should I say, I can have an opinion but should not expect it to be taken seriously!

Doodle2U · 26/09/2008 20:00

LaVie, that's just not stacking up for me.

The Dr who diagnosed my FIL with prostrate cancer was a woman. She went on to recommend what treatments and ways for coping with the pain etc. She'll never have prostrate cancer. Should we have gone for a male only second opinion?

Dr.s have attended hundreds of deliveries, in all shapes, sizes and circumstances. We cannot dismiss a dr's opinion on a single labour "because he is a man".

The Dr in the case outlined here was wrong to say what he did but I don't think we would be right in saying no man can have an opinion on childbirth because he'll never go through it himself.

Sorry but in this case I believe my comment stands. Agree to disagree?

anastaisia · 26/09/2008 20:25

Looked it up and Newham has a section rate of 27.9%. With 4000+ deliveries.

So he is right that a shocking amount of women are having them, and the woman in question did go on to have her baby naturally, so a section really wasn't needed to save the baby's life like the doctor was telling her.

BUT that doesn't take away from the fact what he said and where he said it were TOTALLY inappropriate.

Doodle2U · 27/09/2008 08:12

LaV - yes, agree to disagree but you know, that's a very civilised way to end a thread and not the MN way at all. I expect full- scale fisty cuffs should we meet again

27.9% per 4000 - blimey.

LaVie · 27/09/2008 09:51

I'm well civilised me.

(I learnt my lesson on bf thread when I got a bit carried away )

edam · 27/09/2008 09:59

He's not a doctor, he's an assistant practitioner thingy (the govt. are training lots of people up to help out as it's cheaper than actually employing more midwives/doctors/etc. etc. etc.). That's why he was up before the HPC rather than the GMC.

Doesn't change the essential point that his behaviour was appalling. I'm not sure he should have been struck off the HPC register but he certainly should have had conditions placed on his practice and have been forced to make a FULL apology to the patient.
