OP posts:
Pushpinia · 21/09/2008 13:38

All the fish names have gone in case anyone is interested...

I have gone for this instead. Just for today. She is a character in my as yet fictional first novel

policywonk · 21/09/2008 13:40

Lol Riven!!

Well no I didn't try Gurnard. it that really a fish? I tried Carp and Guppy and then I gave up. I'm not good on fish.

UpSinceCarpOClock · 21/09/2008 13:51

I quite like Pushpinia - sounds a bit Russian to me

pointydog · 21/09/2008 13:51

crapoclock - that's exactly what someone told me once.

wonks, your linked page is far too wordy to be given serious consideration. Do they know nothing of page layout design? (rhetorical)

cote - you sound like a wonderful scientificky sort of person so I'll side with you on this matter. But glass does slowly dribble down the pane - is that still a brittle solid? (And did you chuck those words in to make your answer sound good?)

pointydog · 21/09/2008 13:53

I am talking about Science, not fish names.

An d the batteries in my mouse have nearly run out so I won't be able to mn for much lomger. I am dyyingg..

UpSinceCarpOClock · 21/09/2008 13:56

See, this is the problem of spouting forth carp on mn as opposed to down the pub as in 10 years ago days of yore - people can have an extra window open for google and check you up on your back-of-cereal-packet knowledge

Pushpinia · 21/09/2008 13:59

Thankyou Carpy

I have always liked your name btw.

pointydog · 21/09/2008 14:00

carp, you just have to become more brazen, like a politician, and stop caring if you are found out. Just come up with something eqwually preposterous in your defence.

GillianLovesMarmite · 21/09/2008 14:02

My dh's secretary originally misread the name as the 'hard on collider' which caused much mirth in their workplace...

UpSinceCarpOClock · 21/09/2008 14:04

Why thank you in return

(hands Pushpinia a pint or something for fear of getting too nicety-nice like a 1950's polite drawing room conversation)

CoteDAzur · 21/09/2008 14:12

Sorry but you don't need to have Google on your side to know that glass is a solid Liquids have several properties none of which are present in glass - surface tension, perfectly filling any container, flat surface, etc.

Glass doesn't 'dribble down' over time, it deforms. As do many other materials, especially if manufactured very thin (like glass).

I will go deep into geek territory with this, but iirc liquid form needs pressure - that is, in vacuum, liquids go off in tiny droplets in many different directions. As glass is used in space shuttles, and has not evaporated when shuttle exits atmosphere, glass is not a liquid.

QED

policywonk · 21/09/2008 14:38

'Sorry but you don't need to have Google on your side to know that glass is a solid'

Speak for yourself, cote. Google improves my apparent intellect by about 13,000 per cent (conservative estimate).

MinaLoy · 21/09/2008 15:47

What about the person who was getting a sex frudge delivered? She was worried that sex frudge wouldnae arrive owing to the end of the world. So she'll be glad then.

MinaLoy · 21/09/2008 16:03

Whoops sex frudge lady is writing about sex frudge excitements on another thread. Going to watch. Byeeee

pointydog · 21/09/2008 18:51

so cote, can you just confirm that play doh/pasticine is a solid. (I love it when you;re so scientifically masterful)

CoteDAzur · 21/09/2008 19:04

And I love it when your eyes sparkle.

pointydog · 21/09/2008 19:12

so, can you just confirm that plasticine is a solid?

CoteDAzur · 21/09/2008 19:58

I don't know what you refer to as 'plasticine', but playdoh is a solid.

Is there anything else I can help you with? Or would you like to drag this playdoh thing a bit further to see if you will manage to trap me into a wrong answer?

policywonk · 21/09/2008 20:00

She definitely likes you pointy.

pointydog · 21/09/2008 21:52

no, no, I am not trying to trap you at all, heaven forbid. I wouldn't know a right answer from a wrong one. You are so obviously right.

I am surprised at your lack of knowledge re the word plasticine but I don;t think I should question you further on that point.

policywonk · 21/09/2008 21:54

Plasticine is a malleable sold. End of.

policywonk · 21/09/2008 21:55

SOLID, it's a SOLID

Stupid fecking fat fingers

pointydog · 21/09/2008 21:56

Yes, I have taken that on board and am very grateful to all help received and will answer all children who ask me that question again in a most forceful and decided manner.
