One of those news stories that makes me think 'Do I live on another planet to everyone else?' I mean, I like a bit of bargain flat-pack shelving as much as the next woman, but...

Man stabbed at IKEA opening

LOL Bundle we'd better get over to the snob thread

Gwenick · 10/02/2005 11:22

Actually the BBC news is now reporting that the stabbing 'near' to the IKEA was unrelated to the riots...........personally I think the place is cr*p - visited there last Saturday and was COMPLETELY uninpressed can't see what all the fuss is about!

bundle · 10/02/2005 11:53

you're right, the stabbing was nearby, and the injuries there were crush-related (that's why they closed the store)

bakedpotato · 10/02/2005 13:18

i've seen mobile-phone footage of kids standing around with their paretns in the carpark watching everyone getting squashed

there's a pic of a fireman lifting a toddler out of the melee FGS

the store opened at midnight! who are these people?

Chandra · 10/02/2005 13:20

Frankly irresponsible of IKEA, it had happened already in Saudi Arabia, they should've known better.

bakedpotato · 10/02/2005 13:23

mind you i do worship my ikea washingup brush. it's orange and pink and it's got a little sucker on it so you can stand it upright on the side of the sink. such a good idea. and only 40p!
on reflection, it's almost worth a night in A&E

DillyDally · 10/02/2005 13:30

The bruising will fade, but my huge sack of 350 tealights for twenty pence will last me a lifetime.

jodee · 10/02/2005 13:30

It's shopping hell at the best of times (although I do miss it after a year of living 100 miles from the nearest one - but I think I've almost weaned myself off!)

bakedpotato · 10/02/2005 13:30
Grin
DillyDally · 10/02/2005 13:31

Actually what can you do with 350 tealights when you have kids?

SoupDragon · 10/02/2005 16:02

Have to say, there have been occasions when I've felt like stabbing someone at Ikea and DH gets a mad glint in his eye if I even dare mention the store name...

Utterly mad. Having said that, I've been twice this week already No queues though.

Uwila · 10/02/2005 16:09

According to the bbc, the stabbing was down the street and unrelated to the IKEA opening, just happened to be in the neighborhood.

Hulababy · 11/02/2005 08:58

Can't believe people can behave so badly - well, I guess again really. But it does amaze me at what lengths some people will go too.

I personally don't think Ikea is to blame. They had consulted police, they has 45 security there, they'd handed out food and drink to people waiting.... IMO from what I have seen and read it was impatient people that caused the problem, not Ikea.

Can't believe some people took babies in prams, and toddlers - at midnight - to Ikea - on opening night. Utter madness. Apparantly people were pushing babies in prams over the north circular - a dual carriageway! And it was a really cold night.

No way would I have been there - I don't think I need/want anything enough!

pixiefish · 11/02/2005 15:18

Have just seen a picture in the daily mail of a toddler being lifted backwards by security staff to get him/her out of the crush. FFS what are people thinking taking their toddlers out at that time of night... agree with hula here... TBH it makes me cry just thinking about it
