Writers who are monsters - should their works be withdrawn by booksellers (WARNING! - Potentially distressing content)

The case of Roger Took disturbed me. It's a disturbing case.

Article in the Spectator here
He's a convicted paedophile who happens to have written some well-regarded travel books. Should Amazon and other booksellers continue to stock books by him? What do you think?

southeastastra · 11/07/2008 18:20

aren't there any people that can just despatch these blokes with a shot to the head

Quattrocento · 11/07/2008 19:18

Oh gosh that's a sinister conspiracy theory, I don't even want to think about the implications of protection for this man by newspaper editors/judges etc.

How is it possible to silence the entire media though? Because it wasn't on TV or reported on the internet or anything.

Might it be because the police are still investigating his friends and co-conspirators?

I hope so.

His wife was on R4 this week, trying to get his crimes recognised and publicised.

She sounded so hollow and devastated.

Slubberdegullion · 11/07/2008 19:49

I heard that too Alistair. Dreadful, dreadful man. That poor woman. Increadibly brave of her to push for the publicity of his hideous crimes.

Tnoog · 11/07/2008 19:54

I listened to that interview too.

Totally admmire her commitment to making this
public.

She must be completely devastated.

morningpaper · 11/07/2008 19:54

very, very sad indeed.

And it seems wrong that it isn't illegal to discuss those sorts of fantasies in chat rooms etc. You would think it was covered by some sort of 'incitement' laws

I don't understand the logic of wanting to ban his books though, sorry

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 19:56

I think not stocking his books is the least of what this man deserves.

In fact, I can't even write what I think anyone who views this type of stuff deserves, because to me, viewing it is as good as doing it yourself since it creates demand.

LittleBella · 11/07/2008 20:07

It should be covered by incitement laws, shouldn't it?

No I don't think bookshops shouldn't stock his books. I do think that the publishers should state very clearly in the biog section, that he is a vicious paedophile who has been implicated in the murder as well as rape of children.

Astonishing how his wealth and status has protected him from being vilified by the media as he would have been had he not been posh.

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 20:08

Frightening is what it is, LB.

People who indulge in 'fantasies' like these need locked up. Forever.

And I don't give a toss what motivates them or why they think like that or whatever. They know goddamned well it's beyond wrong and anyone who thinks this way is a danger to society and should be treated accordingly.

I would say I hope his path never crosses the wrong person's, but I really hope the opposite.

OomphreyCushion · 11/07/2008 20:12

I am stunned that this conviction passed by almost without any coverage in the media.

He may be well-regarded professionally, but still....

myredcardigan · 11/07/2008 20:14

Sad and shocking.
I don't think this thread should be deleted as it's raising awareness. Nor do I think the title is particularly graphic.

snotbuster · 11/07/2008 20:15

I heard the Women's Hour interview with his ex-wife too. Thought she was an amazingly brave woman - can't imagine how she's got through such an awful ordeal.

foxinsocks · 11/07/2008 20:23

could be out on parole in 3 and a half years (sigh)

littlepinkpixie · 11/07/2008 20:24

That article is disgusting. I wish I hadnt clicked on that link.

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 20:24

let's hope whilst in prison he strikes up a 'friendship' with someone like [http://news.scotsman.com/alanwilsonmurder/Man-convicted-of-killing-paedophile.2547682.jp this].

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 20:25

this

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 20:26

I don't find the article disgusting.

I find the FACT that people like this are not punished more severely disgusting.

Veraduckworthshandbag · 11/07/2008 20:38

Amazon sell books by mad muslims that tell you how to blow up christians so I don't think they will care that they are selling books written by a kiddy fiddler really.

Also better stop getting CS Lewis books and J.M Barrie, both sickos.

LittleMissBliss · 11/07/2008 20:46

That is vile, but i'm glad that someone had the guts to write an uncensored article. i can't beleve this hasn't been reported on mainstream news. That man is sick and twisted. i think all his books need to be pulled asap. He doesn't derserve to live in my eyes.

mrsruffallo · 11/07/2008 20:51

Quattro, I can't believe you linked to that.
I do not want those images in my head.

mrsruffallo · 11/07/2008 20:52

To much information in the article. It's unnecessary

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 21:01

I think it's necessary so that people realise that these types of people deserve way more punishment/longer sentences than they usually get.

Kimi · 11/07/2008 21:03

Oh god, I read the link and I feel sick, really really sick, brave thing to post.

I think I will demand his books be removed from any shop I am in from now on.

Tell me again why we can't hang evil scum like this... I would.

LyraSilvertongue · 11/07/2008 21:09

As a journalist myself, I really, really doubt there has been any kind of cover-up because he's rich/posh. There could be some legal reason if others are still to face trial. Or maybe most editors considered it too vile to publish. I certainly wouldn't want to be reading all those horrific details in my morning paper.

myredcardigan · 11/07/2008 21:10

Well I for one am glad this thread was posted, however shocking I found it.

IMO, the thread title is phrased well enough to let us know the content is not going to be nice without being disturbing in itself.
