As it is the anniversary today and I am a wife of an offshore worker who is in the North sea, I just wanted to post and say that the families of the 167 victims are in my thoughts today.

Safety offshore has improved but it Piper Alpha should never be forgtten, nor the amount of men killed 167 died and only 61 survived.

was reading about this yesterday, what a tragedy

yummymummy4 · 06/07/2008 18:42

It was, my eldest son was asking all about it and it was very hard explaining that his dad was safe knowing that there are still shortfalls in health and safety offshore.

There's a play about it tonight on Radio 3.

My father works off shore sometimes and worked alongside a survivor from piper Alpha who, after a time away from the rigs, returned to work off shore because he relished the companionship.

icod,

I am embarrassed to say I have never been to the memorial but I promised my son we would go this summer.

I was almost in tears trying to explain everything to him, I was only 8 when it happened and it is only as an adult I understand how tragic it was and the numbers involved.

My husband loves the offshore life especially the two weeks at home and the team he works with. When we had our youngest baby they gave us enough money in the form of a collection to buy a lovely double buggy.

Very sad & my thoughts are with all families of the victims.
However the tragedy did serve to highlight H&S issues and so much has improved since then - not only off shore but in all industries

Lost a friend who was on board. It was his first 'proper' job out of uni. He had only been there a matter of hours

Thinking about his family tonight.....

Very sad Thinking of them all.

My brother occasionally works off shore on such rigs, so in my thoughts often.

It is very sad. I remember it well as I lived in Lossiemouth at the time, so it was pretty big news and we all knew someone who lost their life.

The families of those who died and the survivors are in my thoughts today too.

What a horrible way top die.

MmeLindt · 07/07/2008 12:56

How very sad.

My uncle was offered a job on Piper Alpha and turned it down as he was not happy with their safety record.

I remember phoning my mum in a panic because I could not remember the name of his rig.

Thinking of the victims and their families.
