Virgin media issuing warnings for downloading illegal music

Virgin Media has told Newsbeat there is "absolutely no possibility" of taking legal action or banning internet users as part of a campaign against illegal file-sharing on its broadband network.

The firm has sent 800 letters to customers over the last month warning that they should not be using "unauthorised peer-to-peer networks" like BitTorrent or Limewire to swap copyright songs.

The individuals were identified by the music industry body, the BPI, as part of a wider investigation into the sharing of music files over the internet.

The record industry wants all broadband companies to cut off users that continue to swap copyright songs on sites like the Pirate Bay and Isohunt.

DS2 (the teenager) uses itunes (which I pay for ) but DH (the old man) uses limewire although I keep telling him not to

So much for the BPI plan then

Any company that leaps to disconnect users on the basis of a suspicion by a private company will be committing suicide.

That letter is oddly phrased. It makes it sound like BitTorrent or Limewire have to be authorised whereas they are perfectly legal programs used for other things as well as copyright infringment.

My niece showed me a BitTorrent site which I tried to use to download a video. All indications were that it was going to take 2 days to download so i went to iTunes and paid for it - downloaded in seconds.
I know I know - I missed the point - illegal "going to take days" one was free. But just not worth the hassle IMO.

interesting how easily they can see people downloading music/videos illegally, shame they dont put so much effort in to stopping people watching child porn, but then i suppose thats not costing companies money so its not as important.
