Quite right about Whalley, Jan (don't mind if you're the mumsnet one or not). Although I always thought they can't pronounce Whalley Range properly in Manchester - maybe that's what got VLS so confused.

Yes, it was me ! Now waiting to see if the Ref Librarian shoots me down next week! (Mind you, in a broad E Lancs accent the word "woe" does sound like "war", and "lay" like "lair" - only without the 'r' on the end. Vowels are stretched here - when DD2 was in Brownies she assumed one of the leaders was called Tony Owl!)

Thanks, muminlondon! Isn't the Mancs Whalley Range pronounced the same way though? There is an area of Blackburn called that too, and it sounds the same.

Whalley Range in Blackburn definitely rhymes with Morley but I've heared Mancunians pronounce their Whalley Range like wally. In fact, I've just checked with a Mancunian here in my office and alas, 'tis true!
