How long does it take the BBC to report news. It’s been over an hour since Cyprus was hit by a drone.

I keep refreshing the BBC news page but still nothing on it. Luckily I understand there are not any casualties, but have been watching the RAF on Flighrsdar start flying from Cyprus to Lebanon before disappearing off radar.

Mist be scary for the military partners and children hearing those sirens and trying to keep safe.

What makes you think the BBC is going to report on anything without first checking its sources and with the MOD, particularly with something like this?

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 01/03/2026 23:50

BBC always wait for double confirmation.

TrendingTerror · 01/03/2026 23:51

Sources are the MOD!! They’ve already emailed and text serving personnel out there.

That surely doesn’t mean it’s been classified as suitable for general release? I’m sure the BBC will release it when it’s officially confirmed.

Notmymarmosets · 02/03/2026 00:03

The BBC are often incredibly tardy which makes them almost unusable as a news source.

Maybe the MOD has told the BBC not to say anything yet then. Totally understandable if it is a matter of national security involving our armed forces.

Why are you hopping up and down waiting for the BBC to announce it when you know already?

onelumporthree · 02/03/2026 00:10

Curious username you have there OP.

Why would bbc posting make a difference to your worry?

There's a RAF refuelling plane circling near Cyprus but airspace over Cyprus isn't closed. Nato plane is circling north of Iran as is a Turkish drone.

justasking111 · 02/03/2026 00:46

@TrendingTerror you'll find the most recent information on Twitter. But it won't all be accurate

cubistblast · 02/03/2026 01:10

It’s in the telegraph :

An explosion has been reported at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.
Unconfirmed reports suggested the incident, which took place at around midnight local time (10pm GMT), may have been caused by a drone.
A “small drone” had “impacted the airfield” in Limassol, the Cyprus Mail reported.

On the BBC Live feed in the World news section

"RAF responding to suspected drone strike at UK base in Cyprus, MoD says

Published at 01:20

A British RAF base in Cyprus was targeted by a "suspected drone strike" on Sunday night, the British Ministry of Defence has said.

The MoD said the armed forces were responding to the attack at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus at around midnight local time (22:00 GMT). The BBC understands there were no casualties in the suspected strike.

"Our force protection in the region is at the highest level and the base has responded to defend our people," the MoD said."

The BBC prioritises accuracy over speed. They look for multiple sources and check facts carefully, particularly in complex, sensitive or volatile situations such as this. They are still the world's most trusted source of news, and they want to maintain that position. This means they are not the fastest source of breaking news but, when they do report, their reports are usually accurate. They do still sometimes get it wrong, of course, but information you see on the BBC is far more likely to be accurate than posts on social media, for example.

There's a balance really. Is it better to report news with appropriate journalistic verification, or to act like a TikTokker and report any old rubbish as soon as you see a rumour? Personally, I prefer to wait a bit longer and see news that isn't fake. If you prefer the alternative, then there are various unreliable sources that will serve you unfiltered bilge.
