I'm afraid I need some help to find the downside here. Hopefully some smarter posters can point the way ?

I'm confused. Why do you need a downside?

Homicides? Is that murders?

plentyofsunshine · 29/01/2026 12:06

Don't know why on earth the BBC are referring to it as homicide, it's murder surely?

Anyway - it's a good thing

I also think people are less likely to get away with murder these days what with CCTV, mobile phones, facial recognition and vehicle tracking so it might be that thats making people think twice, for a certain type of murderer anyway. Obviously a domestic murder is something else.

Another thing that might be influencing this is improved medical care and life saving.

I think homicide is used to refer to both murder and manslaughter. Anyway I wouldn’t consider it a downside but with the fall in violent crimes against the person there has been a marked rise in financial crime against individuals and businesses. Like the rest of life a lot of crime has shifted to being online.

Well usually, when someone posts about apparently straightforward good news, someone else comes on the thread to point out just how wrong they are!

The BBC are using the same term as the ONS. Homicide covers murder, manslaughter and infanticide. So no, it isn't necessarily murder.
