Protest in Australia and Canada

Is UK news reporting on the mass anti immigration protests in these countries? Just this weekend we've had Canada first and I saw online ( nothing on the news) Australia first holding huge rallies. How are these countries portrayed generally in UK news?

I wouldn’t call a few hundred people in Toronto a mass protest

Tourmalines · 12/01/2026 02:50

In Melbourne . I wouldn’t even know about it .

What? No! There's been no 'huge rallies' here in Australia.

TheDoubleDeuce · 12/01/2026 03:26

Well that's good to hear. We all get served up different information and it's helpful to be able to ask others if that's what they see or see happening. I think for instance the coverage I see coverage of UK protest in Canadian media that would appear to much bigger and more widespread than perhaps they are. I was interested to know if these events are also covered by UK media..

A few months back there was.

Tension high in Australia as far right 'emboldened in way never seen before' | World News | Sky News

"In August, around 50,000 people demonstrated in towns and cities across the country. There were clashes at separate rallies between far-right and far-left protesters in Melbourne."

Speaking at an anti-racism rally in Sydney, deputy leader of the Australian Greens, Mehreen Faruqi, told Sky News: "The far right are emboldened in a way that I have never seen before."

Back in August or so. A mate in Melbourne was going downtown regular then, and he sent me photos he took of the various demos he saw, including anti immigration. I linked a Sky News UK article in another post below.

Well, I didn't think the OP was referring to last August or October weirdly enough.

There's certainly been some anti-immigration rallies but I wouldn't describe them as huge.

I’m in Canada, no protests on the news or my newsfeed.
You realize most of the country is deep into winter or west coast rain “atmospheric river”?

TheDoubleDeuce · 12/01/2026 03:53

Yes, I was seeing stuff from this weekend,. but like I said I only saw the Australian protests online and it wasn't clear when it was. With such conflicting narratives being served up by each side it's sometines hard to know is this actually happening.

@BreakingBroken- Yep, I'm currently in the ' atmospheric river ' category but I'm more used to being deep in winter. I'd rather have the blue skies and snow.

Yea, back then but only small scale . Most people got on with their daily life and had no involvement unless directly in the cbd .

Not "huge rallies" in Australia, just motley collections of misfits. In the photo above, note the "PAULINE 4 P.M." sign.

Pauline Hanson is the leader of One Nation, a tiny far right party with only one MP in the Federal lower house (Barnaby Joyce, a drunken clown who shuffled out of the National Party last year) and a few goons in the upper house, include sad old Pauline herself.

Apparently there was a pro Palestine rally at the weekend in Melbourne despite the police asking them not to because of the bushfire situation atm.

I can't remember where I read that but it wasn't in the UK news i don't think.
