It has cheered me up a lot to think that there is a politician who is prepared to stand up against the erosion of personal freedoms.

roquefort · 12/06/2008 18:09

And full marks to the Lib Dems who have agreed not to stand against him.

DeeRiguer · 12/06/2008 18:15

Callisto · 12/06/2008 19:19

I fell in love with David Davies when I heard the news at lunchtime.

Agree about Lib Dems Roquefort.

Callisto · 12/06/2008 19:27

Having just seen his speech I'm even more in love: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/conservative/2118091/David-Davis's-42-day-detention-res ignation-'may-backfire'.html Swoon.

It actually makes me proud to be British again. Amazing.

Perhaps Labour won't field a candidate in the by election. In which case it will be lots of people turning out to choose between David Davies and Screaming Lord Sutch and the like. A completely pointless exercise.

I suspect the Labour party are canvassing as we type and will only field a candidate if they are confident of winning the seat (DD's majority was about 5,000 in the general election)

I am against the 42 days.

Upwind · 12/06/2008 19:46

Were there any political parties in support of this except for Labour?

Have Labour become even more extreme than the BNP who reportedly won't be standing a canditate?

tyaca · 12/06/2008 19:48

see, i'm more ... how's it going to do anything to actually halt the legislation? what will ultimately stop it will be the lords stalling and it subsequently getting lost when the tories get into power in next year. now, if it were a member of the gvt resigning then i'd be impressed. but it isn't. or if davies was going to stand as an indy against the tories as protest about their stance on the bill i might also sit up and listen. as it is, i cant help but think this is a bit of a waste of tax payers money...

DeeRiguer · 12/06/2008 19:48

swedes i dont see how labour cannot field candidate for this
i am just so glad this has came to the fore however and there seems like there will be debate about what is happening with civil liberties, ours here and now and for us to pass on..

OP posts:
tyaca · 12/06/2008 19:49

(and by the tories stance on the bill, i mean their reluctance to committ to changing it back when/if they get into power)

DeeRiguer · 12/06/2008 19:54

i thought they said they would recind the bill tyaca, i could be wrong though..

gb did this to look tougher than the tories who do have members with views on state interference with the individual

dont think it will halt legislation though house of lords might do that, it does however have people talking about why he is doing what he has done and for that i am grateful..

tyaca · 12/06/2008 20:11

we should all be up in arms and on the streets, tis true. but really, as a member of the opposition, it must have occured to him that that's what the next general election is for...?? the bonkers things is that 70% of electorate support the legislation, yet he'll bump up his majority not on this issue but just cause of the anti-brown sentiment that;s so prevelant at the moment... he's just preempting the general election

edam · 12/06/2008 20:35

Who says 70 per cent of the electorate support it? And how did they reach that conclusion?

Next general election is too bloody late - laws are very rarely rescinded and a new government will be too busy looking at its own agenda to move very fast on this. And won't want to get back into the whole ding dong or be accused of being soft on terror.

Swedes · 12/06/2008 23:10

DeeRig - Of course Labour can not field a candid. They will say it's a waste of tax payers' money - he should not have resigned his seat if he is standing again for re-election. They will call it a pointless stunt - at the expense of the tax payer. Oh and GB will say he wants to get on with the business of running the country.

stickybun · 13/06/2008 01:06

Woke up this morning feeling rather depressed after 42 days vote - what a difference a days makes. Am so encouraged by the fact that there is someone who appears to be prepared to take risks to defend liberty. I know that he's a Tory and has un-pc views on many things but do not care - this issue goes way beyond party politics and 'tis why was so hacked off last night. Just want to know where to send money to (oh well that's DDs new bike gone - never mind ). Does anyone know, can we get car stickers and stuff - even if we live dahn sarf?

wrinklytum · 13/06/2008 01:09

David Davies is my local MP.He's OK,for a conservative,(and this is high praise indeed from me.)

Upwind · 13/06/2008 06:09

The Murdoch press seem to have taken a stance against David Davis. Now I really want to know where to get stickers and stuff. I'd also be glad to contribute to his campaign.

I don't care that he has some non-pc views. I really admire what he has done and he seems to be the only one taking a stand for civil liberties.

edam · 13/06/2008 09:24

I actually phoned his office in parliament to register my support. Shocked myself, coming from a family with a long and distinguished history in the Labour party. My godmother's father was sacked and thrown out of his tied house for daring to stand as a Labour candidate, in the days when coppers used to break up Labour meetings and attack people with sticks.

But this issue goes beyond party politics. And anyway, Blair and Brown have betrayed the party and everyone who sacrificed so much on behalf of ordinary, working people.

purits · 13/06/2008 09:33

Why are we so apathetic in this country? We should be rioting in the streets over 42 days! Well done DD for making a stand.

I grew up in the 70s, under the very real threat of being blown up by the IRA. We never needed 42 days then so why do we need it now? In fact, can I remind you all that the recent Troubles were intensified because of internment ? 42 days is likely to cause resentment, not cure it.

RubberDuck · 13/06/2008 09:34

He is my new hero.

I've always said that if Conservatives strongly came out against ID cards and other erosions of civil liberties then I'd change my vote to them next election.

Did anyone here him on Radio 4 this morning? I only caught part of it, but he was saying that he did this because stuff needs to be in the news for 3 days+ before people actually sit up and take notice. If it's only in the news for a day, people forget due to apathy.
