are you "panic buying" petrol?

possible supply problems in the UK

where I live, in Portugal, since last night people have been queuing for petrol/diesel.

Diesel has now run out in most petrol stations in my town - some are closed, and they are still queuing (at 6pm) for petrol.

Me and Dh "panic" bought last night. We have enough for a week. The truck drivers are striking to force the gov to cut taxes on fuel, and of course, the knock on effect is that we all rush out and buy.

Interesting phenomenon, don't know what will happen.

Drove home today past several petrol stations with no queues outside, and felt up-lifted that my fellow citizens had clearly seen sense and not bought in a panicky kind of way. Until I noticed that the reason there were no queues was that all the pumps had signs on saying they'd run out....

BexieID · 13/06/2008 21:48

I queued for 15 minutes at Morrisons to get mine, although they are the cheapest and always seem busy!

whomovedmychocolate · 13/06/2008 21:52

I am heavily pregnant and so long as I have enough to get to the hospital if I have to, I'm not going and waiting in some stupid bloody queue with panicky people obsessing that they might go below half full

Besides which it costs money to carry all that extra petrol around, the weight of having a constantly full tank per year is around £50 I believe.

filled up last sunday and not used the car much this week [smug]

i hate it when you really need petrol but people think you are just panic buying.

we are also going from scotland to france in july and i am worried incase something like this happens then, i have spent to much on ferries and accomodation (and disney passes) so will be very if we cant go.

WideWebWitch · 14/06/2008 12:54

I bought some last night as I only had quarter of a tank left and I need it to get to the station every morning next week. No queues at the time.

I can't say I've got any sympathy for the strike action, 7% seems v v reasonable to me.

WideWebWitch · 14/06/2008 12:54

And a tank will last me over a month.

MuffinMclay · 14/06/2008 13:01

No queues here (Herts/Beds) that I have spotted. Did feel buying petrol yesterday in case people thought I was panic buying (although why I should give a toss what random car drivers think I don't know).

shinyshoes · 14/06/2008 13:09

Its all good here in Romford, the Tescos Extra here had no queues I just put in £15.00 of diesel yesturday, I don't need anymore than that for a few weeks

wabbit · 14/06/2008 13:22

no.. not been to get petrol and still have over half a tank so should be well into next week's strikes before I need to fill up!!

wabbit · 14/06/2008 13:24

did anyone hear that they're asking for £36,000 pa?? and had turned down an offer of £41,000 because it didn't have the benefits they're asking for??

Am I living on another planet or does this sound like an awful lot of money?

TwoIfBySea · 14/06/2008 19:41

wabbit it does seem like the greedy bug is catching. They talk about fair pay but if they are talking in terms of fairness then who are they to demand fair pay. Yes, it is dangerous work, like driving a bomb I would imagine, but there are jobs where the danger is more and the pay is less.

I wrote to my MP at the start of this fuel price rise and have had two replies. He actually passed it on to "Maggie" Broon which I am slightly taken aback by - now I better get on to him about voting in the 42 days. Like I think it is going to make a difference or that they would listen to a nobody like me but still...if everyone wrote to their MPs...

I was thinking of filling up tomorrow, or rather half filling as I always do now the same amount gets me less. I usually do so on Monday but am going to be really busy but rather than do so to be convenient I don't want people to think I'm one of those panic buying numpties!

expatinscotland · 14/06/2008 19:43

no probs here getting petrol or diesel.

costs a bucketload, though.

i don't blame them for striking.

everyone's getting screwed by the shareholders, and as long as that's true, then i'll support the strikers.

SparklyGothKat · 14/06/2008 19:46

My light came on on thursday, so friday morning after school run I went to get petrol. First garage I went to were completely out of petrol, so drove to Asda and there was loads of fuel and hardly any cars... stuck in £30 (as £20 isn't lasting very long now, thanks to the rising cost of petrol) and will fill up when I need to again

SheikYerbouti · 15/06/2008 06:56

Drove from Bath tpo Brisol yeserday with an almost empty tank - All of the petrol stations were sold out.

But still, I care not - no fuel=no work. Hurrah!

SueW · 15/06/2008 07:15

Business as usual at a local garage last night (10pm-ish) as we walked home from a friend's.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 15/06/2008 14:17

SW London - have passed loads of petrol stations ove rthe last few days - seen no queues, just look normal - in fact in sainsbury's where i stopped to put air in tyres this morning, looked quieter than a normal sunday morning (perhaps everyone has a full tank ). Then again, even if people did top up early, unless they deliberately drive more miles then the following few days are likely to be quieter anyway, surely?

The 2 petrol stations nearest to me (Beds)have run out of petrol completely today. No diesel either at one, and the other had only one pump still with diesel (which was what I wanted, thank goodness).

Flashman · 21/06/2008 15:50
