Government wins on 42 days detention with just 9 votes

Shameful. We are now no better than a rogue state. NO other democracy in the world detains people without trial for such a length of time.

Particular shame on the DUP - their MPs' nine votes got the government through. Wonder what backroom deal they did?

Off topic a little here but for those who believe that Scottish MPs shouldn't vote on English only matters (and I believe they shouldn't) why isn't there a fuss about Welsh and NIrish MPs? Also the fact that while a huge fuss is made over how much we in Scotland get from the Barnett formula (after 300 years of being told what to do and being held back) no one seems to be willing to point out that NI gets more per head. Without generously giving over any natural resources.

Forty-two days is ridiculously long. But who would like to start a bet that soon 90 days will be an absolute necessity.

Good for David Davies.

David Davies is an absolute star. Bloody well done, that man. Although it will cheer the government up by presenting the Tories with a headache - gives them a bit of respite. But still, nice to know there are still some men of honour in the House. (And women - Diane Abbot was great in the debate.)

It is no headache for the Tories. The LibDems are strong in Davis' constituency and they are supporting Davis.

It is a brilliant move that will keep the erosion of our civil liberties in the public eye until after the by-election. Davis is a skillful and popular politician, and with the economy going down the pan, a Labour candidate would not have a chance against him. If Labour refuse to stand a candidate against him they look even weaker.

The notion that public opinion is in favour of internment seems to be based on a poll carried out for the Telegraph. I hope that, if this stays in the news, and voters have time to think about the implications of our loss of freedom, well informed public opinion will be very much against 42 day detentions.

Brilliant argument here: blogs.ft.com/maverecon/2008/06/42-days-detention-without-charge-i-favour-48/#more-262
