Fugitive father with 3 kids shot dead in NZ

This story has gripped the world and now appears to be drawing to a close. A father of three who refused to return the children to the estranged mother had been on the run for FOUR YEARS in New Zealand.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c5yer8g9q9gt

He had taken his eldest on a number of armed burglaries but his latest one was foiled.

Initially felt a tiny bit sad he was killed but then I read he had shot a police officer in the head. Who knows if they will survive. And what suffering has he put the mother through? Four years of not seeing her preteen and younger children.

There is no way he could’ve been living off grid for four years had this been in the UK due to our higher population density.

Bravo to the police for laying spikes on the road to pierce the tyres of the quad bike.

Those poor kids. What a fucking terrible situation. What a selfish man. I hope they get all the support they need.

I assume the kid who was with him would have seen their father shot dead which must be so traumatic. The poor children. Police won’t yet say if they’re being returned to their mother.

The poor children will need a lot of help as they've had four years of propaganda from their father. Hopefully they will be pk in the long run.

Those poor kids. I'm glad it didn't get to the point of him turning on them. That's what I've been worrying about as they've closed in on him.

Those poor children and their poor mother who will now be left to pick up the piece of this sorry excuse for a father's selfishness.

I really hope the police officer makes a full recovery but I fear the kids will sadly never fully recover from the trauma they have been put through. Sad

The risk was always family annihilation. Does anyone recover from being shot in the head? I hope the officer fully pulls through.

Such an awful case and so many mistakes.

he first took the children in September 2021 and brought them back. That’s the point action should have been taken.

Instead it was a wasting police time charge which he never showed up for.

so many missed opportunities over the years, whilst all along she had the custody order.

I don’t know the basis of that, but those poor children have spent what half, a third of their life’s on the run.

I had no idea this was all happening until today.

Those kids must have been absolutely freezing in winter! I feel so sad for them. God knows how their mum feels.

I'm delighted that they found the other kids. A few hours ago when I last checked, they were still looking for them. At least now they're all safe and together.

I read that the police officer is expected to survive but will need further surgeries. I hope that's true. What an awful situation all round.

Yes, the police have had to be very cautious in how they've approached the search.

The BBC report said the oldest child was able to guide police to the camp where the younger ones were, so it seems the oldest one at least is able and willing to communicate and cooperate.

Luxio · 08/09/2025 13:01

I'm pleased the eldest child was able to help locate her siblings and that they are back together. Hopefully they can help each other as they begin the almost impossible task of overcoming the trauma they've been through.
