[[http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-1317732,00.html 'party on a tube' ]

Why would you go and drink sat on the underground?

I'm not from London- is it normal practice to socialise on the tube system?

Why create carnage just because Boris Joh nson has banned drinking down there??

What a load of knobheads.

they are the unwashed masses - the 'great british public'

Strange people drinking on the Tube aside, the whole ban is stupid.

The problem on the underground isn't people drinking on the Tube, it's people getting on already drunk (and falling asleep on you, wetting themselves, vomiting, being generally unpleasant). People who have a can of lager on their way home from work on a hot day aren't a problem at all IMO.

And drivers say that they aren't going to stop the train, get out of their cab and find and confront someone on their trains, so gawd knows who's going to enforce it anyway.

The whole thing was cooked up for a cheap soundbite that won't actually make a difference to anyone's life in London.

Totally ridiculous.

LuckyStrike · 01/06/2008 09:51

Oh yes, Circle Line parties are quite common on the Underground. Get a big bag of booze and go round and round all night. The ones I have happened across have always been fine and no disturbance to us other passengers. Given the history for them, I was not surprised at a final night party.

LuckyStrike · 01/06/2008 09:53

Have just read the link. Can't believe it turned into such carnage

Twunts.

meglet · 01/06/2008 13:32

Lucky that no maniac decided to stick a bomb down there last night. They were rather a sitting target.

PuppyMonkey · 01/06/2008 13:33

That's London for ya. What a shit hole!

SenoraPostrophe · 01/06/2008 13:38

meglet, what are you on about?

I think you'll find there are always people on the tube, and some maniac could always find people to kill (and lots of them are indeed sitting targets in the sense that they are sitting down)

tiredemma - the object of the thing was not to create carnage. that was a side effect. there are bigger things to get worked up about.

meglet · 01/06/2008 13:41

senora I meant that trying to clear out a tube full of drunk people was going to be a hell of a lot more tricky than evacuating regular commuters.

But I am a big wimp these days and scared of the tube, so maybe a bit biased.

SenoraPostrophe · 01/06/2008 13:42

it would probably be easier, actually. slower reactions, less panicking.

Blondilocks · 01/06/2008 13:59

Everyone I saw going into the tube last night seemed to be in good spirits. I think it's just the same problem with any night out - those who don't know when to stop & those who would start a fight whether they were on the tube or in a club or just walking down the street.

Although to be honest I was glad I was leaving the tube at that point & really don't see the appeal of getting drunk in such confined spaces!

niceglasses · 01/06/2008 14:00

I think it was probably a good idea that got out of hand. Don't think they were 'knobheads'.

The ban is ridiculous - pure spin and all for image. Its not drinking on the tube thats a problem, its being tanked up when travelling. Another can of Special Brew on your way home aint gonna make that much difference as others have said. It'll be banning smelly burgers on the tube next - which is just about worse than drinking imho.

Its a bit nanny state and just superficial. Meeting for a drink to celebrate the end of it in a mild protesty way makes sense to me. Shame it got out of hand.

Blondilocks · 01/06/2008 14:12

I agree niceglasses - don't think they were "knobheads" either. Well maybe one or two, but you get that anywhere.

LynetteScavo · 01/06/2008 14:30

LOL - only in the UK!

What is the point in banning alcohol on the tube???? I don't really remember ever seeing anyone drinking....seen lots of drunk people though. Are drunk people banned full stop? If you're a bit wobbly you could fall onto the line...very dangerous and inconvenient.

Breathalise everyone going through the barrier, I say, Boris!

Callisto · 02/06/2008 09:15

Funny - everyone I know who lives in London thinks the alcohol ban on the tube is a good idea.
