Is this meme ironic or not?

My FB friend (fellow school mum) posted this to her FB page. She is a really nice woman but I know where she stands politically. Anyway, I saw the pic and thought: surely this is irony. However, she would not have posted it ironically for sure. It seems very sinister if it's been posted without tongue firmly in cheek.

Question 1: does anyone know its origin. Is it ironic?

Question 2: Should I say anything on her post? What?

Is this meme ironic or not?

Looks like a political statement, I would ignore it if she's a friend and you want to remain friendly. Unless you agree with her politics.

PrincessOfPreschool · 01/09/2025 08:49

I don't agree which is why I assumed it was created in irony. I wanted to say something kind like "I think this meme is meant to be a comment that those putting up flags are a bit ridiculous..." but nicer.

I don’t really get it tbh but am assuming that it’s potentially a bit racist? Personally I think it’s a bit ridiculous that the flag of a country can be perceived as racism. If she’s nice then perhaps it’s a bit we should reclaim the flag for normal folk aka not wildly racist people.

I’m Scottish and lots of Saltires dotted about it was quite politicised for a while as a symbol of independence/ anti English sentiment, it carried on being used though and now is back to just a flag, certainly to me at least. I do think the English flag should be used/ displayed on public buildings in an effort to normalise it. I think it was a mistake to let it be claimed by racist groups. If it carried on being used that’d of found s plan B. Like in the U.S. white suprenacy groups seem awfully fond of flag waving but it’s hanging off every public buildings so they use confederate flag.

I think it's brilliant. I'm stealing it. 🌕

There are a lot of threads just lately, from posters realising their political ideals don't line up with their close friend/DH/father/cousin/brother/mother in law/work colleague/neighbour et al...

It's baffling that they are only just discovering this...... 🤔

There must have been a thread a day this past week and a half regarding this I reckon. As I said, it's baffling that they didn't know til now.

If it's not tongue in cheek then it's cringetastic 😬

SchnizelVonKrumm · 01/09/2025 09:02

The two flags on the left are upside down, too (the thicker white diagonals should be uppermost on the side of the flag closest to the flagpole, if that makes sense!).

Eta the one on the left isn't just upside down, it's completely wrong!

@ZovI haven't just realised at all. My point was whether I should say anything and what. What do you like about it? @Tiredofwhatabouterymakes me feel a bit better about it. Thank you. Just pasting flags everywhere rather than any serious intent.

To me, it was like the UK all worshipping the England flag, which is painted on the moon (a global phenomenon) so it just seemed ridiculous but actually scary if people seriously think England is above the rest of the world (including the UK).

It can be taken as irony or as a show of solidarity to the cause. It depends on the person who posted it. I find it funny.

Dontcallmescarface · 01/09/2025 09:14

The moon is English now???? I think the rest of the world may have something to say about that. Absolutely pathetic.

SmiteTheeWithThunderbolts · 01/09/2025 09:19

I don't get it. Why are the people waving Union Jacks while the moon(?) has a St George's Cross? Are they proclaiming their 'Britishness' in the face of an onslaught of 'English' sentiment being imposed on them?

Or is it a poor attempt at national pride - but which nation, England or UK?

If you want to comment to your friend, maybe ask her what the heck it's trying to convey.

thegrayhunter · 01/09/2025 13:35

If you want to end the friendship, comment? You sound as though you've made your mind up; forgive my saying so.

I have to admit I didn’t get that atall. I sort of thought it was Britain endorses/ respects English flag rather than it being used as a symbol of racist bigotry. It seems quite twee. If there were blokes marching along waving British flags it’d be a bit different but it looks celebratory.
