I saw this announced on Facebook. I was trying to work out which was the lagoon area. The wave pool?
such awful news, the poor girl and family.

NameChange30 · 04/08/2025 22:05

Yes it's the wave pool.
I have a 4yo DD, can't begin to imagine how her mother must feel. Just heartbreaking.

It’s obviously not totally clear yet how or why it happened as they’re asking for anyone who witnessed anything to get in touch.

NameChange30 · 04/08/2025 22:41

Assume her parent(s) lost sight of her and she drowned. It's always stressful taking little ones to water parks. We took DD to one at Easter and insisted on a float vest (though she put up a fight!) and then she wanted to swim "by herself" ie without us holding her, can be tricky when they want to be independent but still need you right there. Anyway as you say we just don't know yet, assume there will be an investigation.

That place has been a death trap for years, it was awful 20 years ago.
Why isn’t there a law for under 5s to wear a life vest at water parks?
Poor little mite. My Grandson is 5 and just learning to swim, he’s never without armbands in a pool.

Chinyreckon · 05/08/2025 16:26

Absolutely agree! I know it too and although it can happen anywhere I heard the headline and knew it would be there as opposed to other waterparks in the area. DS loves water but too many past concerns re health and safety to go there.

BG2015 · 05/08/2025 16:33

I live a few miles from here and I've only been a few times with my DC (now grown ) when they were younger. It's not a great place. Always a bit grubby. Not sure about safety.

Its absolutely awful and I feel so much for the family.

TinkerbellStarbright · 05/08/2025 16:35

Waterworld should’ve been shut down years ago. It’s filthy and over crowded. saying that won’t bring her back and it’s just so so sad.

I have seen life vests push children's faces into the water, and they do not have the strength to right themselves, so this is not the solution, as it makes adults even more complacent.

K0OLA1D · 05/08/2025 16:54

I'm local and its absolutely awful.

There are so many posts about how dangerous its been when people have visited.

Its just a terrible thing to happen.

mum2jakie · 05/08/2025 18:56

Absolutely tragic. Thoughts with the poor parents.

NameChange30 · 05/08/2025 19:09

It was on my list of places to take the kids but have removed it from the list now!

Bit harsh given nobody knows the circumstances yet.

Meh. I have a long list and lots of other (closer) places to visit that haven't been in the news recently because of a child dying.

Chinyreckon · 05/08/2025 20:45

It stopped being on my list when emergency services evacuated it in 2022 due to people there having symptoms that were reported as possible chlorine posioning.

Yes I've just come across that story too, doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

I live fairly locally and used to go regularly as a child but have never taken my children as it has a reputation as an absolute death trap. Obviously I don’t know the circumstances of this particular incident, but reviews of the place are constantly complaining of the overcrowding. I also heard that they used to dye the water which made it impossible to see if anyone was under the water (I don’t know if they still do this). RIP to the little girl, her poor family 😭

I used to go to the aqua disco as a young teen. Dyed water, dark with flashing lights! It was a recipe for disaster really. I can't see them doing that now though.

I have heard lots of complaints of overcrowding

BorgQueen · 06/08/2025 10:56

People who were there that day have said on a local fb page have said it was very overcrowded.
Drowning is silent and fast, no struggling or splashing with children, if kids are wearing blue they disappear once under water.
apparently she was with a few other kids ‘supervised’ by her aunt so her parents weren’t even there.

It’s not an accident, it’s negligent manslaughter on the Aunt’s part, and criminal negligence by the owners for letting in so many.
I hope the HSE shut the place down.

Sad A lot of swimming pools have rules about the adult:child ratio. I wonder if the aunt was responsible for too many children. What an awful situation.

FanofLeaves · 06/08/2025 11:50

I think ‘negligent manslaughter’ is a bit of a bloody leap until the exact, established circumstances are known. there could well have been other adults there as part of a group and the little girl was tagging along with her aunt and her cousin. And yes it is usually one adult to two children, I think at centre parks it’s one adult per child under 4.

CrispieCake · 06/08/2025 12:56

What an awful tragedy - I'm so sorry for the family. I think in these sorts of places you really do need one-on-one adult supervision for u-5s and weak swimmers. I have a toddler and a weak swimmer, and the only pools I will take them to on my own are 'boring' ones with a lifeguard where I can see the whole pool from one spot. And of course bright orange/red/pink swimsuits. My younger one stays within arm's length at all times and my eyes follow the older one around the pool.

We visited this place last year with friends, and even with an adult per child it was still very hectic and busy. I lost sight of my older one a few times for a few seconds, but he had instructions not to go in the water or down a slide unless with one of us.

I hope you’re in full receipt of all the facts of exactly what led up to this awful incident, casually throwing around accusations like negligent manslaughter. Confidently announcing it wasn’t an accident when realistically the poor family themselves are probably still piecing together what’s happened! Have some respect.
