I despair. I have unfortunately read a horrific news article about this poor poor baby. 😢 I cant understand how these people could have inflicted such injuries upon their precious premature newborn. How do people deal with this mentally after reading such horror?

I try not to read details anymore

My faith in humanity is at an all time low and sinking with every year that passes.

I don't understand how it was even possible. Surely a SCBU is a busy place, with too much coming and going to have time for this withnoone around?

Apparently the father was quite aggressive in tone when nurses suggested things to him. I guess they didn't have time to regularly check on baby 😭😭

It's just absolutely horrific. Wish I had never read the article. I'm not sure how to cope with what i have just read

I hadn’t heard about this case until now. It’s so shocking. Totally inhumane and I don’t understand how the baby wasn’t under surveillance. That’s not in any way to apportion blame to the hospital staff I’m just appalled that this could happen.
social services are not able to remove children without due process and this case is an example that they need greater powers in this situation. Poor baby being born to monsters.

OverlyFragrant · 15/07/2025 21:53

The unit has serious questions to answer too.
How was that baby unmonitored for so long?
How was it possible for those injuries to be inflicted without no one noticing?
Why did no one put safeguards in place and raise the alarm after witnessing the father distress and rough handle his premature baby?

This and the Countess of Cheshire debacle gives me shivers about the state of our baby units.

I just don't understand how that can happen though. It must be a very different set up to the unit we spent time in. There were multiple babies, always several parents, nurses situated in the room. No room was ever completely empty of staff except. Most babies on monitors to flag up breathing issues. How does this happen in SCBU?

JazzyBazzy79 · 15/07/2025 21:59

I can't understand how they wouldn't have heard that poor babys screams whilst he was being tortured 😢 the injuries inflicted and just thinking of the pain that poor baby had endured in his first moments of life just break me.

Im not sure :( i can only assume the monstrous father had pulled off this little babys monitors. Apparently social services had already informed them that the baby was going to be removed from their care at birth and the parents didn't seem "bothered" 😫 it is also reported that the father turned animated when asking the nurses to check on baby as baby had turned cold. Seems like it was almost premeditated 😭😭

My God. I hadn’t seen this case before. Daniel Gunter sounds like a sociopath. I’d lock him up and throw away the key. Absolutely horrific.

He was shouty and rough with the baby in hospital, when changing him, etc. I wonder if the nurses noticed? If so, why didn’t they tell him to leave?

Brendon was going to be taken by social services at birth. Wonder why the parents were allowed access in hospital if that was the case? No doubt social services will have ‘lessons to learn’ after this too.

that poor wee boy.

Always lessons to learn after a tragic outcome sadly 😥 baby Brendons death could have been prevented. Just heartbreaking.

Another who can't understand on a practical level how this could have happened, we had months long stay in neonatal care and were never ever alone in a room with our baby by ourselves, not once. Nurses weren't standing over us but there was always always a nurse at the desk, feeding other babies etc.

Anyone had a baby in SCBU there who could explain their set up?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 15/07/2025 22:19

Social services had told the parents baby would be removed at birth then allowed them access. RIP.

Unfortunately we did have quite long periods of time when we were alone with our baby (and the other babies in the room). Our SCBU was split into 3 rooms and if they were a bit short staffed/ it was break time you could go for quite a while without seeing anyone. I did worry when we had to leave her, especially at night.

You also had unsupervised access to the other babies?
That’s not right, is it? Total safeguarding breach.

Yes we did. And yes you’re absolutely right that it’s a total safeguarding breach.

Every morning I skim the news on my phone on the BBC news feed. I do not get bogged down in details. I know there is massive suffering in the world, but it helps no-one for me to absorb it all. I just need an overview to be up to date.

But these parents were considered so high risk that social services intended to apply to court for a care order. I can't understand how they had so much unsupervised time with him on the ward. It doesn't add up.

Psosugi · 15/07/2025 22:34

I'd not heard of this case and did a Google search. OMG I can't believe what I've read.
That poor tiny baby

How on earth was that able to happen actually in hospital?

That’s very odd. Usually the parents would only be allowed to visit with supervision and wouldn’t be able to do cares like nappy changes, etc.

BernardButlersBra · 15/07/2025 23:31

Not sure why the nurses and doctors are thought to be at fault?! They were busy working. Not their fault the dad murdered him, that's on the dad and the mum. Doesn't sound like they were that bothered whilst smoking outside the hospital
