I've been fascinated with this case since the footage showing her fake crying. Did seem guilty from the get go.

I just don’t understand why she’d do this?

BellissimoGecko · 07/07/2025 08:50

Yeah, this is no surprise. She was clearly guilty.

Scully01 · 07/07/2025 16:43

I doubt she'll ever admit to it, think she wanted to get back at ex, as he was invited too. Her poor kids, stuck in the middle of it all.

Wiping her eyes during the fake crying despite there being no tears!
Shaking her head both times when she said 'they're some of the best people I've ever met' - giving herself away over such an obvious lie. She deserves to spend the rest of her life in prison.

Scully01 · 07/07/2025 21:04

The eye wiping was diabolical, the way she kept looking at her hands at the non existent tears. Bizarre.

I find it an extraordinary case. What was her motive? Surely she knew she’d get caught.

VirginaGirl · 09/07/2025 12:14

I don't think the verdict was a surprise at all but what I don't fully understand is the cause of the rapid decline in her relationship with her ex.. There was obviously more to it (that was probably covered during the trial) but it seems as though they went from chatty messages and banter to her turning very cold when he said he was 'separated' on that form (and this apparently meant she would need to claim child allowance? It must work differently in Australia?).

She seems to have been very generous indeed with money she had inherited.

I wonder if it is a case with her of feeling a huge sense of injustice that she had given him half of her inheritance and he then expected her to fund the children herself and their school fee's etc.. Was she really only receiving 40 dollars in child support from him?

So extreme to then go to attempted murder of her exH and murdering his family.

Another thing that I saw covered in the early reporting was talk of her exH being previously hospitalised with gastric issues and speculation that she had done this before. I wonder if he suspected that she may have tried to make him sick then and this was why he turned down the offer of the family Beef Wellington lunch?

Feel for her kids.

Have been listening to all the podcasts but I still wonder about these things.

if her exh suspected that, then why would he allow his family to still eat a meal made by her?

It is a really peculiar case. Was it driven by spite/revenge?

Well, that's a very good point! It is curious...

HelloGreen · 09/07/2025 15:09

Why attempt to kill your aunt and uncle in law as well. Was everyone collateral damage?

I don't think it occurred to him at the time that she would attempt to hurt his family and potentially their kids.

Scully01 · 09/07/2025 15:19

I think there will be further charges regarding her ex.

People keep asking about her motive. DH was saying she didn't have one. But she wanted to get back at her ex and his family. For an unhinged, vindictive person, that is motive enough. She didn't invite her own family to the meal. Or her own children, did she? She was annoyed that her ex made last-minute excuses and didn't turn up.

Originally the prosecution wanted to try 4 or 5 counts of attempted murder against her ex at the same trial but the judge said it would need to be a separate trial. I don't think they will be pursued now with 3 murder convictions and 1 for attempted murder.

But it meant that Simon Patterson was under a gagging order during the murder trial and not able to discuss the several instances of "mystery illnesses" he suffered after eating food prepared by her - including an instance where he was in intensive care in a coma for several weeks.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/07/2025 15:48

There is still a gagging order in Australia imposed by the trial judge, on any mention of Simon Patterson’s 4 (I think) previous serious illnesses which landed him in hospital, always after he’d eaten a meal prepared for him by his wife, despite Erin Patterson having been found guilty. This was the reason he turned down the invitation to the Beef Wellington meal. He didn’t warn his family of his suspicions because he didn’t think she would want to do them harm, only him. Media in Australia is not allowed to talk about it and Simon Patterson was not allowed to tell his whole story during the trial.
There is another string of threads about this on here which has been going on since well before the trial began. Someone on it posted an archive link to this Daily Mail article which is not available in Australia, as the article is behind a paywall. I found it fascinating.
https://archive.is/99afV should work.

ETA: I hope that all makes sense!
ETA again: Hello, @Lunde, I hope you don’t mind my pinching your links to the DM article, I didn’t realise you were here or I wouldn’t have done it!

The shocking secret about mushroom killer Erin Patterson

In the end, Erin Trudi Patterson's fate was sealed by her lies. She lied about deliberately picking death cap mushrooms. She lied about buying and using a Sunbeam food dehydrator...

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom Interesting, thank you for posting this. There was a build up to this, then.

Was sure that I'd read somewhere that her exH had been hospitalised previously after eating a meal she had prepared for him.

intrepidgiraffe · 10/07/2025 23:16

I listened to the trial podcast and really didn’t think there was enough for her to be found guilty. But the illnesses of her husband definitely puts a different spin on it.

Enough4me · 10/07/2025 23:20

I hope, for their sake, her children have nothing more to do with her.
While it's possible to dislike and even hate an ex, her behaviour shows her to be a thoroughly nasty individual.
