Is there a thread about Cuauhtemoc already?

I can't see one. I just feel so sad and shocked. She was a beautiful boat to see sailing. And I am utterly devastated for the crew who died or were injured. And it must have been beyond traumatic for all of them.

I sailed on Tall Ships a fair bit when I was younger and I just am a bit lost for words right now

My dp works on a tall ship and is currently at sea- feels a little close to home….

I bet it does @CurlewKate . Thinking of you.

They are such beautiful boats and I had some of the best adventures on them, including several tall ships races which Cuauhtemoc took part in . She was a big contributor the amazing international atmosphere of those races.

I felt sick realising the cadets were out on the yards when she struck the bridge. Just utterly horrifying

when I first heard the news about a 'marine ship' hitting the bridge I pictured something else.
the footage looks strange, the bridge is clearly too low for the ship to pass with masts up. something went really wrong. thoughts with those dead and injured.

my city welcomes tall ships regularly. they are so beautiful!

The early reports said she lost power suddenly
A bit like that other ship in Baltimore that hit a bridge....

I sailed a lot on tall ships when I was younger too, and can remember the excitement of manning the yards when coming into or leaving port, especially for big events like the Tall Ships races.

So tragic to watch this unfold, especially as the sailors seemed to be standing on the yards, so not easy to move out of the way. How terrifying!

CurlewKate · 18/05/2025 18:08

Seems a little strange that the tug doesn’t seem to be attached to the ship….

CassandraWebb · 18/05/2025 20:22

The whole thing seems so strange

It's really tragic.

As far as I understand it the cadets were not up on the rigging. The images were from earlier. Very thankfully there were only a couple of sailors up there otherwise the casualty rate would have been far higher.

Appin · 19/05/2025 07:43

Unfortunately they were indeed up in the rigging. The footage of the masts hitting the bridge shows multiple sailors hanging from the masts by their harnesses.

That what I thought I saw, it made me feel so sick. They are so high up. The tall ship I sailed on was a lot smaller than Cuauhtemoc but we still felt perilously high!

it's just incomprehensible at the moment

Very sad news. I hope the ones in hospital recover well.

Weird it was so close to the bridge that it would never be able to pass under, but maybe they turn round there usually. Although whenever I have been on a boat that has had to turn around before a bridge, they normally do it with plenty of river to go.

There were a couple up there as I said. But thankfully not like earlier footage that showed many many cadets up there.

Appin · 19/05/2025 20:16

I don't want to post a photo, but I saw one with at least 10 to 15 cadets on the top two yards. The footage didn't focus on the lower yards so hard to judge how many were on those.

AlphaApple · 19/05/2025 20:43

I have spent an evening on the Cuauhtémoc when they visited Falmouth a few years ago. The young people were so lovely and a credit to their country and the ship. Totally tragic.

I have also sailed on the STV Asgard II which ended up on the bottom of the sea at the Bay of Biscay…

CassandraWebb · 19/05/2025 23:29

I forgot about Asgard. Another lovely boat gone Sad and how awful for everyone involved in that too.

In fact there can't be many proper sail training tall ships left? Both the Jubilee sailing trust boats have stopped sailing now and so did STA boats I think

Not forgetting the glorious Tenacious-the specially adapted ship that allowed many people with disabilities to experience sailing a tall ship- now currently rotting in her berth because there was no money for her to carry on sailing😥

I know, so sad. She was one of the jubilee sailing trust boats. I have so many memories of her. Such a huge loss to the disabled community.
