Why so much coverage of the new pope?

Can't believe the BBC with their Breaking News. Disrupting the schedule for something that barely anyone gives a toss about.

Roughly 8% of the UK is Catholic so surely a piece on the evening news is plenty?

Ditto US political stories.

Hours spent on another dodgy bloke heading up a huge organisation who's been accused of covering up child sex abuse. Super. Such a shame that so many people in the world are still being brought up and brainwashed by all this outdated patriarchal nonsense.

You sound ignorant with equally ignorant friends. I'm not a Catholic but it is historic. There are 1.2 billions Catholics around the world, there are only 70 ish million Brits in comparison. He has a huge influence on the way of the world the next few years.

Yes, but it still doesn't warrant virtually all day coverage on the main UK channel. It's utterly ridiculous. And I'm not ignorant in the slightest. I understand for some it will be momentous, for others vaguely interesting.

I think there are more of us who will think it overkill than those who will be glued. And I also find it wrong and shocking that the head of a frankly quite dodgy religious group should have major influence in world politics. Anyone who thinks this is ok should be giving THEIR heads a wobble, not me.

Nah you sound ignorant of other people's cultures and belief. We can agree to disagree but that's how you come across.

@SherlockHolmes theres a huge amount of awful crap to watch on the TV - this new Virgin Island program for instance.
I doubt the coverage of the new Pope - an event that usually only happens every several years - even comes close to the same amount of time that crap is aired for
