it's awful, so many trapped in the high school

Callisto · 13/05/2008 10:20

So sad that the weather is slowing the rescue efforts down. And the Chinese 'govt' (who I normally loathe) has responded very quickly, quite a difference to Burma.

listening to the news is so sad, so many children lost.

...beyond belief,

1000 children buried in a collapsed school.

1 town only 2300 people alive out of 10000.

...makes you feel insignificant doesn't it.

bravissimo · 14/05/2008 22:21

just watching the news, it's awful, especially that an entire generation wiped out in towns due to 1 child only policy.

CoteDAzur · 14/05/2008 23:19

This brings back memories.

I was in Istanbul when the big earthquake of August 1999 struck. I watched my bedroom walls move at impossible angles. That earthquake was about 7.6 on Richter scale.

Whole buildings collapsed. People were trapped under the rubble. The search for survivors went on for weeks. Official numbers were 18,000 dead.

Several of my colleagues just stopped coming to work, went to the disaster area with whatever tools they could find, and joined the teams digging the rubble by hand and looking for survivors.

jingleyjen · 14/05/2008 23:23

it is really really sad,
I do find it grates that the BBC are being political in their reporting though.
ITV are not mentioning the 1 child policy
it is devastating that a whole generation of children have been killed in certain areas
only child or not.
(sorry for ranting)

Cote Dazur, i am sure when it is a personal experience you can relate to it and feel the fear slightly. I had to comment on your post, it must have been , well i don't know what the words are! to expereience something like this so closely.

It brings it to home.

I never post on threads like this as their is no words to possibly express the situation.

It........... well i don't know, it is heinous.

Thank you for your reply fairfly

constancereader · 15/05/2008 17:36

It is heartbreaking. I haven't got the words.

I was in Thailand when the tsunami hit...

I feel sick when I think about the "earthquake in the uk". That was nothing, yet everyone went on about it.

Very, very sad. And so soon after the cyclone in Burma too.
