USA / Russia / China / Europe - what is the new world order?

Would be interested into informed insight and views on the power / diplomatic relations dynamic between the above.

Historically I feel wars (hot or cold) have been polarised between fundamentally two sides but with recent events I am confused as to the current dynamic.

US appear to be allying with Russia at the expense of Europe, where does China come in, because it seemed that was where the American wrath was and aren’t China and Russia friendly?

The US/UK special relationship?
The UK relationship with Europe?

The current US elite is allying itself with Russia. That's the Trump administration and the US tech oligarchy.

I'm not sure ordinary Americans are allying themselves with Russia.

Tend to agree - however it’s the government they’ve so recently voted for…

The Donald wants to take over Canada and Greenland.
Russia wants to invade westward into Europe.
China wants to take over nearby countries in Asia.

No country can rely on the USA to help if they are invaded.

The Donald will probably try to go full Putin and change the rules so he can have more than his two terms.

And in your view will the US, Russia and China stand back and let each have their own as long as they don’t encroach into ‘their’ territory?

Sorry if my questions seem silly. I have been sidetracked by a lot of other things in life, having previously been pretty politically astute, especially regarding international relations.

The latest developments have made me realise how out of the loop I am, appreciating there are no answers, just opinions.

I think the crux is what will happen if/when China makes a move on Taiwan. Essentially, Taiwan have a critical position in the global semiconductor industry- no other country can match what they do. Trump is threatening Taiwan with his favourite word (tariffs) because he's envious of their success and wants it for America. Two weeks ago, Taiwan announced that they were going to increase their defence spending. They report that China had increased its military exercises in the local area. If Trump did defend Taiwan, it'd likely be to take it's riches, much like the failed Ukraine minerals deal.

I'd say that it's more important now for countries to trade with our allies, as that gives us money for defence budgets. So for example rather than buying from Russia and China, buy from Europe, Canada etc. Some people are now taking about trying to boycott American companies, partly for this reason and to send a message that tariffs and trade wars don't work.

I just can't imagine the world being divided into three superstates (of which two are always at war with one of the others.)
It almost sounds like a work of fiction.
Welcome to Airstrip One.

Jeremy Bowen on the BBC this morning was explaining a theory that the USA, Russia and China want to act as three independent superpowers and aren't interested in alliances with any others. Presumably that would be unworkable unless there was some sort of co-operation between the three of them though or they would just be at war with each other.

Youngatheart00 · 02/03/2025 11:32

I think that’s just it - can 3 ‘superpowers’ exist?

I agree with Bowen. No reason there can't be three superpowers.

It's the Plum-pudding In Danger again – but this time we ain't carving.

I think it may be particularly difficult for us to really get our heads round this in the UK, because for centuries we have been among the big boys doing the carving (UK as HQ of British Empire, then more recently UK as part of EU, NATO and general alliance of The West).

Now we're among the little guys who get carved up. We may be able to hang together with Europe to make a large enough power bloc – but if we don't we will assuredly hang alone.

USA / Russia / China / Europe - what is the new world order?

For the first time in 200 years America is showing signs of an expansionist foreign policy. This didn’t work out too well for the indigenous American people last time.
I really feel we are seeing a big shift in the world order and I’m not sure what role Western Europe has to play in that.

We seem to be focussed on US rather than mounting military power of China / Russia / other. It’s concerning.

The images from the parade in China show they’re probably better placed to do as they want.

Hopefully they want peace

Taiwan are sceptical. Project 2029 is looming
