Poland next for Putin?

Or too obvious I wonder, maybe the Baltic States or Finland.
Terrifying.

Poland is militarily too strong, patriotic and fiercely anti Russian. The Baltic states are militarily much weaker but they benefit from being full Nato members, an attack on one is an attack on all.

Putin might possibly seek to strengthen the Kaliningrad Oblast and build up influence in Moldova.

borderline53 · 17/02/2025 20:26

That would start ww3, I’m sure he won’t go that far.

lentilbake16 · 17/02/2025 20:26

Yes, I think you are right. Many frightened people right now, I expect.

I also think he’s got his hands full with Ukraine.

If he’s allowed to ‘keep’ parts of Ukraine he’s invaded I don’t think he’ll care about WW3, he won’t stop.

You think he’d want nuclear annihilation?

But what would he gain if he kicked off WW3?

lentilbake16 · 17/02/2025 20:33

I don't know, I'm guessing few of us knows. The situation not helped by having 2 complete madmen in charge of the US.

Thinking he’d hope to end up in control of all of Europe probably.

Copernicus321 · 17/02/2025 20:35

Russia has suffered 500K wounded, I think Putin will consolidate what he has gained particularly in Crimea. Crimea wasn't transferred to Ukraine until 1954 so any peace deal that recognises Crimea being part of Russia again will be a huge coup for Putin. As I posted previously, I think Putin will concentrate on building influence over Moldova so he surrounds Ukraine politically on all 4 sides. Also the Kaliningrad Oblast is very unusual, a piece of Russia 15000 square kilometres deep inside Nato and the EU with a seaport on the Baltic. Many people forget it's there.

WellsAndThistles · 17/02/2025 20:36

The Russian military is vastly depleted at the moment, NATO are much stronger but it would depend on who pushed the big red button first.

Thankfully he is an old man, I hope he just keels over and very soon.

True, but I doubt anyone under him who would take control next will be significantly less insane.

Thanks for your post, I do recall learning about this many years ago in History. I used to enjoy it so much. Now it's on our doorsteps so to speak.

Thanks to the moral vacuum that is currently President of the United States it's looking less likely that this would be the case. NATO is looking like Europe and Canada on our own.

Herewegoagain29 · 17/02/2025 20:48

Russia has lost 856,660 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022.
In November 2022 it was reported that Russia had officially entered a recession as the Federal State Statistics Service had reported a national GDP loss for the second consecutive quarter.
According to most estimates, every day of the war in Ukraine costs Russia $500 million to $1 billion.

I think he'll stay put.

Conscripts. Somebodys son.

Mainly money chasers and convicts.

Wasn't aware that the russians had started conscription

Prigohzin's criminals were offered a literal "get out of jail card". Others do it for the high salaries.

Still people's sons but I think they have all chosen to go to another country and murder the citizens

Exactly, it only starts WW3 if the US sides with Europe against Putin. Not looking likely.

Thanks for the link. I knew they had national service but am sure I read that no conscripts were sent to Ukraine

Kursk is a different matter. I think that's where they were being used

I think if Putin does decide to go for another target it will be Lithuania, to link back up with Kaliningrad. And as for Russia being spent - don't believe it. We've not seen their new weapons, planes or tanks or much of their special forces and highly trained regular army. Unfortunately, I think they could go a lot longer yet.

I think it's more likely they'll go for more of the Ukraine to get their hands on the rare minerals - ostensibly to export them for orangefool. They'll keep them for themselves of course.

What a mess. How did America come to this - shafting its allies to cosy up to Putin?

nitrofueled · 20/02/2025 11:32

I don't think you'll see Putin make a run for any other nations straightaway. He goes for another war then it'll almost certainly be the Baltic states rather than Poland I think though.

If Putin said "I'm having Poland, and if the European part of NATO tries to stop me, I'm going to nuke Berlin", who would respond? He now owns Trump, and neither Macron nor Starmer (nor any other possible French or UK leader) are going to nuke Moscow over a little matter of a 10 kiloton bomb on Germany.
