Kyle Cliford (dubbed the crossbow killer and I hate the way these murderous males are given nicknames) has pleaded guilty to the horrific murders of Carol Hunt and two of her daughters Louise and Hannah. This is how the Mirror has covered the story, their names are not even in the headline https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/breaking-crossbow-killer-kyle-clifford-34527632?utm_source=linkCopy&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sharebar They are seen in the context of the husband and father. The Guardian does cover it better https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/jan/22/kyle-clifford-admits-murdering-carol-hunt-and-daughters-in-crossbow-killings?CMP=share_btn_url

Just imagine if it was 'bus driver's wife and two unnamed daughters'?!
The bloke isn't even a 'star', I've never flipping heard of him.
It seems so disrespectful. Focussing on the killer (male) and the fact that one survivor family member (male) works for the BBC? So what if he does?

AwaitingFreedom · 22/01/2025 14:11

I agree with you. It's as though we are nothing unless attached to a male. Any male.

ikeepforgetting · 22/01/2025 14:50

I was just thinking that, I listened to the news on 6 music and it took several sentences to say their names. Bloody disgraceful. RIP Carol, Louise and Hannah

Gazelda · 22/01/2025 14:58

I raised this with several news outlets when the murders took place last year.

Unsurprisingly, not a single one of them responded nor changed their headline.

SweedieLie · 22/01/2025 15:05

I think that's a stretch.

He's a minor 'celeb'...certainly known by many.

If it was his female equivalents family I'd absolutely imagine some headlines would be the same, mentuonung the celebs name and 'her husband'.

Distasteful maybe but not misogynistic imo.

Agree in this case. I saw similar coverage when director Jeff Baenor died as his wife is more famous than he is.

I do also think there is an issue where women are described more often in terms of their family relationships than men who are more often described by their work. E.g. Mother of two has died vs. Business leader had died. That may also be in play here.

Life sentence for Kyle Clifford. Too chicken to appear for sentencing and victim impact statements

Not sure I trust your assessment. It has been widely reported that there is a third daughter and therefore two surviving members of what was a family of five.

That's ok, you don't have to trust my opinion.

You've just proved my point with poor reading comprehension!

I don't disagree that too often women are described in the press in relation to the men they are married or related to. Journalists look for an angle when reporting. In this case the fact a lot of people will have heard of John Hunt makes the situation more relatable rather than abstract.

What you have had to say about Mr Hunt is pretty disrespectful towards him, a man whose immediate family was made up of women, who he clearly adored. All because, you know, you've "never flipping heard of him".

Edited

If that comes off in that way then I wasn't trying to disrespect him. It's true I've not heard of him.

And why do you think I have poor reading comprehension? You said you didn't trust what I think and I said you don't have to.

I said I didn't trust your assessment of this case [as you seem to have missed information which has been widely reported]. Then you responded and said I didn't trust your opinion. Now you're saying I don't trust what you think. These are three different things.

Before you jump to conclusions you do need to consider whether you have enough evidence.

For me my opinion and what I think are the same thing. Sorry.

BrownPapery · 13/03/2025 15:26

This was raised when the story first happened and there were some really weird responses (people accusing the op of trying score feminist points off a tragedy etc).

Anyway, I agree with that op and this one, but I’ve felt generally that the press has done a better job on the trial than it did on the initial crime - far too much “wife and daughters of a famous man were killed” whereas now most papers have managed to keep the celebrity connection to a minor point.

ChorusOfDisapproval · 13/03/2025 15:57

To be fair, I think they would have approached it from the same angle if it was the husband and sons of a female BBC "star". It's the fact someone was in the public eye that will help to sell papers/online content.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 13/03/2025 16:11

I agree @ChorusOfDisapproval
