I’m guessing he’s resigning? Most Canadians seem to want this. 🤷‍♀️.

he’s just started, he speaks French very well…..is that a prerequisite for Canadian prime ministers? I’m obviously aware of Quebec

I hope things can improve for Canadian politics. I feel sorry for him, he’s always seemed genuinely passionate.

I guess the blackface didn't help

Well seeing as that was over 20 years ago i don’t think that’s why Canadians have turned against him. From what I read they think he’s too liberal.

I expect his decision was rather heavily influenced by the prospect of dealing with South of the border in years to come.

Fordian · 06/01/2025 18:46

Trudeau is like Varadkar and Julia Ahern- rather more popular outside their countries than in!

I'm amazed Trudeau has lasted as long as he has, tbh. He's so woke, in a country seriously battling a CoL crisis; mad levels of immigration etc. I hadn't appreciated it until we had a very middle-of-the-road fellow HCP visit us from Calgary recently.

I think the resignation of his finance minister at her frustration regarding him not taking the Trump tariffs threat seriously - was a big factor, and how carefully Poilievre is positioning himself.

DD’s boyfriend is Canadian and he’s told me about the cost of living crisis. He says he never expects to be able to buy a house in Ottawa where he lives and thinks he will rent his whole life. Which is sad. I think he’d quite like to move here but Dd wants to move there! They’re both fed up with their respective countries a bit.

It would be enough to finish anyone off I think.

The cost of living is crazy in parts of Canada.

Its a complex problem but has most definitely been precipitated by Trudeau's government raising targets for both temporary and permanent visas for foreign nationals. He didn't do that for ideological reasons, though, but to plug huge gaps in the labour force, resulting from low birth rates. His government can certainly take some of the blame but I don't think any western government has a handle on it, and of course, the pandemic happened and the CoL crisis dramatically worsened.

In that respect, I think the main reason that the public turned on Trudeau is the same reason the Dems lost in the US and the Torys in the UK - he was the incumbent during the global supply chain crisis- but equally, legitimate grievances stack up when any party has been in power for the best part of a decade.

I'm very aware that he is (understandably) perceived as "woke" based on past statements but, in terms of policy, he and his party are pretty centrist; probably leaning a little left. Of the three main parties, you have the Cons on the right, the Liberals (Trudeau) in the middle and the NDP on the left. Common wisdom tells us that elections are won from the centre but I'm far from convinced that remains the case - moderate parties don't seem to please many, these days.

For my money, he was broadly fine. I wouldn't vote for the Liberals (other than for tactical reasons) but I'd rather them than what likely comes next.

FeegleFrenzy · 06/01/2025 23:06

It certainly seems like the voters in every country around the world are lurching to the right. Scares me a bit. 🤷‍♀️. Even on MN which I’ve always thought was quite “lefty” it seems to be getting more and more right wing by the week.

He has taxed Canadians to death. I think that's the biggest problem. They've had enough.

I don't think think that's true for most Canadians, though it it is for very high earners. Im aware that he's taken away certain tax relief (e.g. the changes to the lifetime capital gains exemption) but for most people, I don't think taxes have really changed. Canadians still pay less in taxes than the British do.

Hard LOL.

If you look at Canada in terms of UK party political equivalents, LBC are the Lib Dems, CPC (the current opposition, and probably the next government) are the Conservatives, NDP are (Old) Labour, and BQ are the SNP.

Trudeau's party (LBC) are and always have been "liberal" in the traditional (European) sense, but I think he gets criticized for being "too liberal" by people using the (North) American definition of liberal as (in this case, faux) left.

Canada has never given the left a chance to govern at the federal level, and I don't think they will any time soon, but NDP still have a major role to play at the federal and at various local levels.

@FeegleFrenzy Trudeau is a native French speaker! His father was French and his mother English. But yes, it is basically a prerequisite for a Canadian PM to be able to speak French very well. It is incredibly difficult to win an election if you don't speak French. Many of our PMs have been Quebecois.
