Toddlers eat TOO MUCH FRUIT. Doh!

BBC story

...at the expense of fat, sugar and carbs.

SO what do we think? Time to beat ourselves around head for filling them up on apples instead of cheese on toast?

Some of the mums aat our old preschool used to complain when we had snacks like scotch pancakes with butter, toast with cream cheese, porridge, home made cookies! They wanted us to give fruit and carrot sticks etc every day...

We stuck to our guns, offering a variety of different snacks. the poor little loves were starving!

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

ForcesSweetheart - that doesn't sound like too much fruit and veg - sounds fine. And I think the problem is when there is little protein, milk, fat etc in addition to the fruit and veg.

no1 - is your toddler fat? If not I wouldn't worry in the least - they are SO active at that age. She may be having a growth spurt.

ForcesSweetheart · 23/04/2008 19:03

Why is it no matter what we do we end up feeling guilty??

Blu · 23/04/2008 19:04

are you ok, there, HMC?

handlemecarefully · 23/04/2008 19:44

lol, just releasing a bit of tension Blu!

I swear to God, 15 month old Ds4 is addicted to grapes.

honestly, its no exaggeration...I have to hide them from him because he seeems to have this weird built in homing device for them.
He goes to the fridge and just helps himself constanty, all day if I don't hide them.

Fridge isn't lockable in case anyone suggests it.

SheikYerbouti · 23/04/2008 20:02

LTH.
Your DS4 is never 15 months old!

ladytophamhatt · 23/04/2008 20:06

He is sheik, a 15month old grape eating menace

SheikYerbouti · 23/04/2008 20:07

Blimey.

It goes too quick. My DS2 is nearly 20 months old. I feel sad because I'm not allowed to have another, says DP

I do think that kids should be offered snacks other than fruit, especially of they in a nursery setting so likely to be eating healthy meals and just fruit between meals.

Kids need calories!

misdee · 23/04/2008 21:25

LTH dd3 is the same. she made dh buy some the other day at the supermarket, and he stupidly gave them to her to hold. i think the bag was half empty by the time we got to the till

ladytophamhatt · 24/04/2008 08:43

Misdee....you don't mean you stole them do you???

BTW, you needto cahnge the info on your profile, it says peter has teh LVAD still.
Come on woman...keep up!!

DaddyJ · 24/04/2008 09:02

This could explain why dd is usually ravenous when she gets back from nursery,
despite regularly having two helpings at lunch time.

Interesting theory, worth mentioning to the nursery manager I reckon.

OrmIrian · 24/04/2008 10:33

"I also wonder how this fits with the idea that actually 5 a day is a pretty low cutoff for fruit & veg intake..."

Five a day should be from vegetables as much as fruit. Green leafy veg best of all. All the nutrition without the sugar.

I don't find that fruit fills me up - not for long.

mistlethrush · 24/04/2008 10:49

I'm having fruit for breakfast at the moment (diet) which means that ds and I can't eat breakfast together - otherwise he would also just eat fruit (mine) - so he has his first (muesli) and eat what he wants (takes rest to nursery to finish), then I start mine and he eats some of that too. If he had the chance he would practically only eat fruit and veg - so, yes, its really important to ensure that they get a balance but also sufficient non-fruit and veg for all their other needs.

Typical pudding at supper time is fruit with full fat yoghurt. Usually has non-fruit snack during the day - with fruit on top if he is still hungry.

I think he would be quite happy eating 1lb grapes or strawberries straight off, not sure of the consequences though!

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 24/04/2008 11:05

No blu she is not fat at all. birth weight was 91b 3 she has always ate a lot. Family members just made me paranoid because they say she is always eating.
Must be a thing about grapes, her eyes glaze over when she sees them, I honestly dont know how many she would eat if I let her.

misdee · 24/04/2008 11:08

lol lth, i told her to stop eating them otherwise in furture i would her when we entered the shop and at the checkout to see how many grapes she had eaten lol.

will update profile later on

Blu · 24/04/2008 12:00

no1 - I don't even think she's eating all that much.

The fruit and veg don't have many calories, and rice cakes are manly fresh air. I would let her have ice cream - it's a nutritious desert if it's reasonable quality diary ice cream.

Take no notice of your family.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 24/04/2008 14:46

Thanks BLU She does have quite a bit of milk too morning night and more often than not in the day before a nap too.
I will ignore my family.
