Find it awful they have to use the phrase “sex scene” to maintain the presumption of innocence. This stinks of a patriarchal system set up to fail victims of rape.

I have just made.myself read this story as was so shocked when I saw it in the news. Absolutely awful and sickening, but I do wonder how she did not know some abuse was taking form, surly you would know you had sex especially because they weren't wearing a condom. She must of suspected the husband of something. As for the 3 men leaving, well they all meet on some sort of secret illegal sex website hence why they haven't said anything. It scares me the sickening extremes men will go to for sex 😔

Please be very careful about blaming this woman for what happened. I know what's happened is unbelievable but she obviously had no idea. He heavily drugged her and when she had STDs accused her of cheating. She thought there was something very wrong medically and her family thought she had dementia. How would anyone guess at the horror taking place?

The focus shouldn't be on her actions. She's the victim

Totallybannanas · 08/09/2024 15:06

I am not blaming her what so ever, she is no doubt an victim in this. Its just so frightening, its only human to ask questions to understand how this could have happened and how he has got away with it for so long.

I'm absolutely enraged to hear that the men of this town, including the mayor are downplaying the seriousness of this crime. Gisele is so strong and brave, she's amazing putting herself through this public trial. And the local men can't even be bothered to pin the blame on their fellow men or show even a shred of empathy for Gisele.

As if this case could possibly get worse:

Jean-Pierre, 63, a former lorry driver for an agricultural cooperative, is alleged to had contact with Pélicot in a chatroom and allegedly used the same technique to drug his own wife with sedatives in order to rape her, with Pélicot’s involvement. Pélicot is alleged to have provided sedatives to drug the man’s wife and travelled to rape her himself.

Twelve rapes of Jean-Pierre’s wife are alleged to have taken place between 2015 and 2020. Jean-Pierre has told the court that he has admitted the charges.

Police investigators said Jean-Pierre told them he met Pélicot in a chatroom entitled “Against her knowledge” on a website that has since been closed. He told investigators that he had asked Pélicot to come to his home when his wife was drugged, the lead investigator, Stéphan Gal, told the court.

“Each time that [Pélicot] travelled [there], he provided him with the medication for the next time,” Gal said. Pélicot’s lawyer told the court that Pélicot said he gave Jean-Pierre the medication four times.

For many men their first and only loyalty is to other men. They understand that maintaining the patriarchy and the reputation of men in general is the basis of them having the upper hand over women and they are not prepared to relinquish it.
Much of it may be unconscious but they will always try to blame the woman if they can possibly get away with it.

Pepsipepsi · 12/09/2024 18:24

@BlackShuck3 re men keeping the status quo - it's just bloody depressing isn't it?! I think I was just shocked that the mayor was bold and maybe dumb enough to say such candid thoughts to a BBC journalist. Not even trying to hide his awful thoughts!

I can't put into words how the recent news of various acts of violence against women have made me feel about the state of the world. Overwhelmed and deeply saddened to say the least.

BlackShuck3 · 12/09/2024 20:29

I understand why you feel like that @Pepsipepsi but women are making progress and there is much better understanding of the mechanisms by which we are subjugated.
Whilst men may always have a tendency to be more dominant than women I think that malign and predatory tendencies are largely rooted in the way that men are socialized. Not to mention the way that women are socialized to unthinkingly defer to men.
I don't think that men are inherently more bad than women, more that they go bad more easily and when they do they tend to do more damage.
